I'm a farmer so I don't pay....but wait until the last minute to file anyway :D

What percentage do we get to keep anymore? I'm guessing maybe 25 percent of our total income if we are lucky. The rest of our income is paid out to the income ax man (for redistribution to those who choose not to work), on top of getting axed for property, axed for required licenses... and oh yeah, don't forget required permits and various other imposed axings...uhmmm, I mean "fees". Oh, and remember if you SAVE money and earn any interest to amount to anything... you will get axed on that too. LOL. We all get axed to death.

Don't mind at all, paying our fair share for decent roads to get to work and other things like police service and miltary for our country... but fair being the key word.

Have a niece in her early 30's. Never worked full time in her life - did not want to. YOU and I have paid for: her (and her 2 kids by different dads) rental assistance, daycare assistance, free preschool and transportation to said preschool for both her kids, cellphone, medical care and most of their groceries. BUT at least she can still afford to smoke, drink and gamble.

Sorry, don't rant much... bad subject! :)

A friend sent me a long list of the individual "axes" we have to pay. What's amazing at the end of the list it says, "none of these taxes were in effect 100 years ago, wives stayed home to raise children and our government was not in debt". This is progress?

gractorfan,
That would be an interesting list to read. Will have to do some googling - maybe I can find it.

We got a small refund from the Feds, but the State of NY took it all. We support far more percapita, parasites than other states.

When you have to pay in you don't get in any hurry. We have been working on ours for a couple weeks. We will probably work on them about 13 more days. I have been busier rounding up the money I'm going to have to send in.

Wow, sure glad I don"t live where you do. Never paid 25% in taxes, let alone 75%. Perhaps your calculator needs new batteries. Either that or a new accountant.

I pay 15.3% in taxes before I even start paying federal and state income taxes. Let alone paying 9% sales taxes on all my purchases, and property taxes on everything I bought.

I think it may be you who needs the new calculator. She's talking about all your taxes, property, sales, licenses, gas, propane, excise, inheritance, capital gains, I'm sure I've forgotten a few but if you add them up it comes to much more than 25% even without income tax. Last I heard we will go over 50% this year.

Income taxes are done, but like SweetFeet says, that's only a portion of our total tax payments.

This year's federal income tax is virtually the same as last year's. I could probably just copy the forms from last year and send them in for this year.

My effective tax rate for Federal Income Tax is right at 15% of my adjusted gross income. Wish it were zero, but I guess it could be worse.

I call it the "profit penalty". The IRS tells us "You make a profit and we will penalize you". That's my rendition of it coming from an independent wage earner. I don't mind supporting our country, but along the lines with what Sweet Feet said, I abhor supporting people who have learned to milk their way into our tax money. We have WORKED to earn that money we pay out in taxes. We have not sat on our butts and collected three or four different payments from the GVT every month. I'd better get back to WORK so that I can support those who don't!!!!!!!!Jim

Being a self employed farmer in NY state I can't complain too much as most everything I buy is sales tax exempt, and I get school taxes on the farm portion of the bill back from the state.
The one that really amazes me are all the taxes added to the phone bill.

Looks like I am fixing to have it out with the IRS.I don't make enough to pay taxes.IRS says I don't owe taxes. But sent me a letter. Demanding a payment on 00.01. Or they will take it out of my bank accounmt

I did my Federal return in Feb and received my refund in 3 weeks. Since we're both over 70 we get very good Std deductions. Had to pay less than 4% of total income. I had the state to do my state taxes. Hal

When I sold my business in '05 they wanted 87%. That was including state and federal and capital gains.

I kept my accountant real busy this year. Had Indiana inheritance tax in late February, our income taxes in early March, my deceased Dad's income taxes and deceased mom's trust late March. No taxes on the trust, it had to be documented for whatever reasons.
