Building plans

When I was in the planning stage on the barn I"m building, I stumbled across this site. Lots and lot of plans there, and not just buildings. Gates, feed bunks, corrals, etc...

Lots of stuff there, but kind of a sad commentary on the state of our land grant universities- most of the plans are 50 years old or more (clear back to the 1920's), and I didn't see anything less than 25 years old. As you can imagine, many are completely obsolete, like gambrel roofed tie stall dairy barns with overhead hay storage.

But still worth looking at, for construction details and ideas.

There are quite a few modern style building plans on these sites that would still be useful to most folks, but I think the older plans are both more interesting and made available because of the historical interest in the older ways of doing things, not because they don`t have any better. Modern pole barn plans are a dime a dozen, have not changed much since the 70`s, and are stone simple compared to some of the old post and beam and plank-framed gambrel barns. I have quite a few plans saved off of both of these sites, because I am looking at building a 36` wide gambrel barn, and the older plans can be pretty hard to find.
