O/T: TH400 trans, solid in reverse but no forward gears?

It's in a 1985 Southwind motorhome, 454, 105000 miles. Fluid is full and clean. IIRC, there are no electronics in this transmission. So why would it perform like this? I thought reverse and 1st gear(or 2nd) were on the same band/clutch? So, given that reverse is solid, why do I not have at least one forward gear?

I loaned out my manual on these to the neighbor last year. It hasn't come home yet, so I'm doing a little preliminary research/troubleshooting here.

Your opinions and suggestions are appreciated, and my apologies to those who are offended by O/T posts.

Thanks,

Anthony

How long has it sat for. My turbo 400 would drain the TC if it sat for awhile. I would have to let it idle until it was good and warm and add at least a quart of trans fluid. The turbo 400 will leak out from around the dip stick tube as the TC drained back. Reverse would work with low fluid but not the forward gears.

Been a long time sense I've been in a TH400. But if you lost 1st gear it's very possible to have reverse and nothing forward. The tranny has to start forward in first gear before it will try to shift into 2nd. And that old of a drive train with that many miles it's about right for a failure.

Others have mentioned so of the casuses.

The forward clutch is burnt up or like these guys said, a snap ring is broken. All the forward gears work with the forward drum applied, but not the reverse. You"re gonna have to tear it down. If you want a good tranny for it, rebuild the one you have rather than buy another. The TH400's in motorhomes use planetaries with straight cut gears... much stronger than the more common helical cut ones, but hard to find. If you buy a rebuilt one you won"t know what you"re getting.

As stated it's the forward clutch. Forward clutch is applied in all forward speeds. High/Reverse is applied in high and reverse. Bands are the same way also. Most manufacturer's have a "What's on when chart" to help in diagnostics. Gerard
