I am just starting out farming and am wondering where or how to get a tax id number for my farm. Do I need one to buy fertilizer from the co-op? Mainly just would be buying fertilizer, seed, and other things. I am in michigan if it matters.

It matters a lot what state you are in. You could call the state department of revenue and they probably have a handbook for you with all that information.

Call 800-829-4933 or visit irs.gov to apply for a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN), commonly called a tax ID number.

I'm in Michigan too. Wherever it is that you're buying inputs from, whether it's the fertilizer plant, implement dealer or local hardware store, just ask them for a tax exempt form. Fill it out as per the instructions. You'll need one every place that you buy inputs.

rrlund has it about right. All I ever used for my number is my social security number. You have to use that for your taxes and income tax anyhow.

Here ya go.

You need an employer id for your business, unless you really like the idea of handing out your Social Security number to every Tom, Dick or Harry you do business with.
Form SS 4

In Mi you just fill out a form and the company you are doing business with will keep it on file. Some will ask you to renew it every two years. Some don't even ask you to fill out a form. They will all ask you to sign a copy of the sales receipt saying its for use in Ag. Production. You can get a tax ID.number but I never did. I use my soc. security no. I never had no problem but I do file federal and state taxes on my Farm Operation.

Like someone mentioned - call that number and they will set you up. I don't like to give out my social number, so EIN is better. They will give you the number immediately and then send you documentation.

Not true.

LLCs, partnerships and various other entities require EINs and there are advantages to obtaining EINs for sole proprietors, though it is (still) not required to do so.
