Been fighting some kind of head cold/sinus infection for more than a week now. Go to thinking about how my mother made us take a tbl spoonful every morning. I didn't mind the taste. Since they changed the active ingrediant I wonder if it is still as effective. I haven't looked but can you even find cod liver oil anymore?
The tonic was a non-alcoholic mix made of cod liver oil and had a licorice taste.
Today, as sold, the active ingredient in Father John's Medicine is Dextromethorphan HBr.

Wow, that brings back memories!!
And, my Mom also always had "Save the Baby" on hand for colds which she administered in several ways.
A dab under the nostrils.
On a cloth placed on the chest.
and.....a few drops in a teaspoon of sugar
for taking orally.
I don't know if any of those old time remedies
actually worked but a little extra attention
from Mom was always welcomed.

I have a gallon can partly filled with Cod Liver Oil. It is the original can it came in. Came out of an old store in town.

Wal-Mart has Cod Liver Oil in pills here in town. Don't know if it is as good as the old stuff, but I'm sure it's easier to get down.

Reminds me of Mary Carter's Little Farter Starters and Dr. Sprockets Rectum Rockets. Vicks vapor rub and a mustard plaster. Campfer oil and kerosene.
