John Deere RWA Disk

I found what appears to be a good used one. Do they work well or should I wait for something better?
Just need it to get some sod ready for reseeding.

Most discs do a good job when set right-we had a RW when I was a kid and if I remember the gangs are not adjustable-level it and pull a drag behind it and you will have a good seedbed! If the price is right BUY IT!

I use one just like that, only a 12 footer. It is a pretty light disc, but if you make sure your soil conditions are right before you use it and do a good job plowing it will work fine. Pull a drag behind it and you will have a good seedbed. Discs are still avalable through your jd dealer, but the discs are a uncommon diameter/square axle hole combo so selection is limited other places. According to the jd dealer when we were researching them to get parts, these discs were contracted from another company and the jd name was put on them because it was before jd started making their own heavy tillage equipment but that's just what I was told. Hope it helps, and price seems a little high. I would think you should be able to buy them for under a grand, but proabably not so pretty.

If that sod is not plowed then any of the old disk you will fine are not going to cut heavy sod much. You will just make a mess. It takes a heavy disk to cut sod and even then it will be a rough finish when you are done. Unless you make many passes with rains between them. I mean like weeks between them.

All I remember about a RWA is they have non-adjustable gangs and they ridge badly. The one in Utica appears to have a fresh paint job but it does have most of the scrapers. If I was wanting a JD disk of that era I wold rather have a AW or better yet a BWA.

Well, thanks for the feedback. I think I'm gonna pass on this one and see what happens. We have a run down hay field here, so the sod is pretty sparse at best, soil and water guys says to just go ahead and no till drill into whats there for now and we'll see how that works.
Soil test was done last fall, 2 ton per acre of lime installed then, along with half the fertilizer the test called for. We will be installing the other half this weekend.
this field lays on top of a ridge and gets plenty of sunshine and good drainage....hate to plow it for fear of the weather I can't control.
For now we will experiment a little at a time and see if anything works well.
And I remember way back when dad used to yell at me for making those ridges in the disked corn ground, nothing worse than a rough hay field.

I have a disk like this, 12 foot RWA.

You say it's a "light" disk.

What's the difference between a light disk and a heavy disk? Are you talking about the iron it's made with?
Is a better or heavier disk made from bigger, heavier iron?
A heavier disk will dig into the dirt better?

It all boils down to pounds per disk blade. The larger the number the more plow is capable of deeper penetration. The RWA doesn't have a very large # per disk ratio.
