tractor for TMR mixer

I'm looking for a tractor for my verticle screw TMR mixer that is rated for an 80hp or better tractor. I also hope to do some field work which is limited to running a diskbine, drilling small grain and bringing baleage in from the field. I have a case IH 5240 that was a little too much for my mixer and now needs $6,000 in repairs. I am planning on trading the 5240 in for a rusty looking case IH 966 and maybe $20,000 in cash. So my first question is, am I stupid for trading in a good tractor for a rust bucket? Will the 966 be able to handle my chores? What other tractors would be suitable for running TMR mixers? Note that I don't need pretty looking tractors and if you can't tell, I prefer red ones! ;)

If you are set on trading and putting some cash in your pocket then I'd be looking for a hydro 186 or even a 986 or 1086. I think the step backwards in operator comfort might be a tad much going from the 5240 down to a 966, but that's just me. To answer your actual question, yes, a 966 will do everything you want.

Around here that CIH 5240 would bring in the 20-25K range in working order. So if it needs $6 K of repairs than I think you would be hard pressed to draw anywhere near 20K in cash. Really I doubt you will find many that would pay you boot on a trade of that much difference.
 
I have both a 5140 and a 966. 5140 is almost the same as your 5240, these are all good tractors. The thing most around here are finding when they put an older trator , like a 966 on a TMR mixer is that they soon take out the PTO clutch pack. Not built to withstand that load, when mixer is started full of feed, or grinding wet hay bales. I would stay with the tractor I know, and keep the 5240. Bruce
 
I think his TMR needs the $6k repair, and he is looking for a way to pay for the repair. Personally I would be looking for another TMR, but don't know his financial stuuation. Seems like a big step backwards to me.

I think Casey is right. 966 is one of my all time favorite IH machines. It will do all you throw at it with what you have coming. I'm not sure about the clutch pack thing as the most we did PTO wise was the mixer grinder. Spend many hours on it.

That said, you would like a 1086. We traded an 856 for one and I thought I was in heaven. There's a bit more muscle than the 966 and it is a newer machine. It might be just perception, but I always thought the 966 we had was the lowest on power of our tractors.

Buying a machine that is just big enough for the job is asking for trouble. Especially if that machine is about 40 years old.
 
The 5240 needed the repair although today I found out that it will only be a minor fix ($2,000) and not as bad as first thought. With that said, I am working on trading in my 656 and a Farmall 400 on that 966. But again bad news today, I find out my 400 has two bad cylinders and is therefore shot. So I'm hoping to find some cash to add to the trade.
 
What kind of shape is your 656 in? Around my parts a nice 656 is worth about the same as an OK 966. Why are you getting rid of the 5240? Are you just trying to free up some cash or what? If the 5240 was hard on your TMR then a 966 will probably be also as HP and torque are close if not a tad more from the 966 if it's healthy.

i think the op was written a little confusing. some guys can't tell weather it's the tractor or the mixer that needs the repair. i think it's the tractor and i don't think i would trade a 5240 for a 966 in any shape, rusty or not. also many of the tractors suggested below will probably run into similar pto problems as none are very big with the exception of the 1086, and as one poster said that tractor is pushing 40 years old. a newer stronger tractor may be in order if there is alot of hay or baleage in the mix.
