Along the highway

I have driven past this little building along rt 78 west, just past Bethlehem PA ,Probably thousands of times. I Pulled off the highway to take a picture of it,It is all that remains of what used to be a homestead, probably was bought out when the highway went through the farm, As I drove off the other day,I was wondering ,,should I post it on tractor talk? Then I realised why we all like this tractor site,Sure it is an old tractor site, but it is more than that ,Most of the people on this site have something in common. They realise that time does not stand still, but they try the best they can to hang on to some history, and use old stuff if it is still good,I guess thats why I took the picture and posted it,It may be just a little old shed that used to sit next to a farmhouse, but somebody worked hard to build it,so I Think it is worthy of a picture and a posting on T Talk,,,,, I hope some of you do too

larry@stines,
That is so cool! Great photo. I would love to wander around there...though the vines would make it difficult.

Glad you posted it. And I agree, I think many on this site have a common love of all things old and preserving them (and photos are a way of preserving them).

I feel the same way. When I see an old huge barn, I can just imagine the many men and their great craftsmanship that it took to build such a building a hundred years ago. Thanks for the picture Larry.

I agree whole heartedly Larry..........keep the photos coming

Its been raining, sleeting, snow pellets, cloudy, windy day (near southeast Michigan)

Just wish the building could talk.. You gotta wonder about who, what, when and where,,,,,, when you see an old site like that. Boy, the stories it could tell..

Nice picture Larry.
Looks like that little shed has a chimney. Smokehouse maybe?
Sometimes the stories and the history are the best part and they
help make the old things worth hanging on to.

Hey Larry -

I did you one better - this picture is not only an old farm building, I took it with a camera that"s at least 70 years old. I kind of like the slightly blurry image the old lens makes, black and white film seemed appropriate. Old stuff indeed!

Ohh, yes, keep posting those pics! they remind me of my Grand-daddy"s farming days, way back in the 1930"s. Yeah, i am that old! (B. 1924.)
All or most all of the farm buildings looked like that shed, maybe not the big barns, but the smaller buildings. good to see at least one surviving now!

Like others have said: If that building could talk. What are the vines? Is that normal? Looks like they could eat up the entire place in a few years. Stan

Lived in emmaus, went to school in Center Valley. Probably saw this place at one time or another. Loved it out there, could nt find work though (early 80s)

Larry,
Your picture and commentary is always welcome in my opinion. Thanks for posting this pic. I always look forward to your great pics.

Yes that's pretty neat, is it a shed or a house? Or a partial house? I see the chimney is still standing?

Stan, I would guess that is Kudzu vines. The darned stuff will take over anything in its path, and is almost impossible to eradicate!

Larry, I agree with your philosophy on the subject. I have never seen anyone complain about your photos, and if someone did, they would likely be banished from this site! Besides, there was probably a tractor used somewhere along the line.
By the way, keep the title (Along the Highway) in mind, That would be a great title for the book of photos you will publish someday! (We hope!)

TomH in PA:

What kind of camera & film did you use?

My two favorite camera's are an Argus C-3, 35mm and an old folding bellows Land camera that takes 116 film & uses the old M-5 flash bulbs.

Keep the pix coming, Larry. As I've said before, I'd like to just ride around in the truck with you; you see some interesting places. As a matter of fact, I wonder how you find time to do that beautiful masonry work you do, what with all your sight-seeing.

I'm sure I saw that same building along 78 just a few days ago on my way out to Lancaster. I went to school in Bethlehem, and my son as well, so I've driven that way many times. But this was the first time I noticed that place. Maybe it was because I was a passenger this time instead of driving. Glad you pointed it out . .. I always enjoy seeing monuments to the past remaining like that. Can't help but wonder what it was, and what it used to be part of. Once the leaves are back it will probably be hidden again. Wasn't too long ago 78 wasn't finished out there, and you had to get off 78 in Phillipsburg and drop over to US22 into Easton and west from there.
