anyone know who to make the brakes actually do much??

new everything.. but still no signigicant braking. drawing 11.3 amps so all the magnets are working. adjusted up slack.. but no detectable brake feeling when engaged. Its on a 36 foot goose neck trailer that weigh about 7000 empty and rated for 25k..

wiring is good. controller is good. whats up?

Dexter had some problems with the 10K axle brakes as well as leaking seals. The 10K brakes on the one i had would self adjust going forward and grab. Some people changed to the 12k axles with a different style backplate brake and a different seal.I know they were sued over the 10k axles.

I've never had a problem as long as they were
adjusted and the magnets were working. Is there
oil in the drums? They also need to be adjusted
pretty tight. I always adjusted them up til I got
just a bit of drag them by the time they were
broke in they were set about right. They should
easily slide the wheels when its empty. You didn't
put them on the wrong side did you? If you
replaced the entire backing plate you can get them
on the wrong side of the trailer, they are right
and left and should say on the outside of the plate.

Yea.Ive had numerous problems with mine. Maybe 3000 miles on trailer and its been repaired 7 times. I think its right now. Hot hubs, leaky wheel seals, dragging/sticking brakes.

I had several customers that had problems with leaking seals. On several I just greased the bearings and eliminated the oil, they never had a problem again. One guy had a 35' Featherlite that he pulls to Arizona a lot and he's still doing that. Says it's never been so reliable.

Is a poor short drawing 11.3 amps or the brakes proper? I've got a
short somewhere in my trailer wiring harness. I've been from one
end to the other twice and fixed a few bad splices but no shorts, its
still not letting my brakes apply correctly. This summer its getting
flipped over to get some rust repairs and hope to find it. I'm
beginning to suspect the breakaway battery wiring.

Check and make sure that you have a good ground, also
what size wire are you using. Ground wire should be
#12 minimum, others should be #14 minimum, brake
wires should be # 12 min. also.

We couldn't get the new 8000 lb. Dexters to work on my son's
trailer either. By luck one day he was checking connections and all
of a sudden all of them came on. When they built the trailer they
had a coupling that was for a tri-axle trailer. They cut the 3rd wire
and didn't seal it good. It was shorting out and not letting the
brakes come on.

You have a wring issue. It is either a bad ground or your not getting the correct voltage at the wheels. You are saying it is drawing 11.3 amps. Where are you checking it??? Also what is the voltage right at the magnet?? That is a better measurement of what is going on. You can have a 11.3 amps at 8 volts and not have much magnet force.

Also what did the back surface of your drums look like??? This is where the magnets run. If that surface is scored they will not work very well. Did you put the spring behind the magnet that pushes in out against the drum??? I forgot on one wheel and the brake would work sometimes and sometimes not. Drove me nuts until I pulled the drum back off.

I have two trailers with Dextra 10K axles. They work good if you keep them maintained. The only issue is the wiring will break inside the insulation from all the bouncing around/wiggling the wires do hanging down to the axle.

Make sure they were installed correctly, and
turning the right direction. They use the proper
direction of rotation to mechanically amplify the
electrical signal.

I replaced all the magnets.. had to try several different types of seals to get ones that workd.. I soldered all wiring at the brakes... get 12.5 volts to each brake,, but they just basically suck.. Almost NO brakes what so ever. The controller will lock up the other trailers but nothing on the 36' gooseneck. Its not a short as each magnet is suppose to draw about 3 amps, so 11.5 amps for 4 brakes is about right. You can push in the clutch, reach down and peg the controller and not feel any significant slowing..

I bought a new single axle with 3500 pound brakes last year and had the same problem. finally called Dexter and they said to adjust them and drive it making a lot of brake applications, they had to run in. They were right, before long they were working properly

IM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MINE 10K DEXTER AXLE BEEN THROUGH EVERYTHING 2 TIME NEW BRAKE SHOE KITS EVEN ADJUSTED BRAKES A LITTLE TIGHTER THAN I WOULD NORMALLY DO PROPER VOLTAGE TO MAGNETS THE ARMATURES WERE THE ONLY THING I DID NOT REPLACE THEY HAD SOME GROVES IN THEM AND CANNOT BE CHANGED HAVE TO BUY HUB AND DRUM CAN THIS BE THE PROBLEM WHY THE BRAKES SUCK ALREADY GOT WAY TO MUCH INTO THIS TRAILER ANY ADVISE

First off, Welcome to the forum.

I will note that using all caps is considered yelling and may get you some negative comments.

Another thing is this site has two different formats for viewing/posting. Using the Modern view, the original post and all replies to it; move to the top of the page and the entire topic is visible to those reading it. There is some background to your post.

If one prefers and uses the Classic view (and there are many here who do), they only see your single post as "Re: dexter 10k gd axles with electric brakes". The original post and replies do not move to the top, they stay back in time where they were originally posted, and few will switch over to Modern to see the post you tagged on to. Without the backstory visible your post lacks detail. And replies to your post may show as random Re's, not tied together when one is using Classic.

For all users to see your issue correctly the best thing is to start a new post of your own and give all info that pertains to what you are working on, the issue(s) you are encountering, and what you have done to correct it thus far.

When you say brake kits did you install new backing plates with shoes and hardware already on them or put the parts on your old backing plates? Were they marked for left or right side and installed on the proper side so the shoes and magnets are working in the correct rotation. Shoes with the longest linings should be to the rear.

My 7,000 with tandem Dexters would drag the brakes in the yard, but my 22,400 gooseneck with duals would not. I had two situations however where a driver ahead of me suddenly panic stopped, and my max loaded combination slowed right down. I always assumed that it was a matter of the gain/inertia sensing in the controller, combined with the traction of the duals.
