Question: Teflon string packing, could that be used for the gas line shut off valve, on the gas tank? Would it detorate quickly? Someone had told me to use graphite string packing, cannot locate in any stores in my area. Thanks, Murray

Are you meaning the teflon tape thread sealer? There is a special one to use for gas, it is yellow in color.

I used to carry teflon string for water valve packings. I can't imagine it wearing out with as little use as that valve will get. you do have to be careful using teflon where brass will rub on it constantly because it will wear the brass.

Murray, if you have a hardware store, Menards, Home Depot, or a Lowes, they WILL have the Graphite packing. It's in their faucet repair section. I wouldn't use the teflon as it's so dense (hard) whereas the graphite string is 'soft' making it compressible. As was also mentioned, there is a different color teflon for gas, so the white string could deteriorate.

I think Murray is in the UK. So Menards and those places wont help him much. Though an O-ring might be of some help till you can get the packing.

well drillers, pump installers, irrigators, should have the graphite string. Anyone working with water systems.

I have used the teflon packing string with fuel/ gasoline for years with no problems. The valve works easier with much less friction on the stem with teflon packing compared to graphite packing.

On a LOW pressure gas line - under 10 psi, Teflon cord packing should be acceptable. On High pressure gas lines - over 10 psi, you would want the Graphite cord because of the compressability within the packing gland. As with any pressurized gas system, always check for leaks with a soap solution when finished making repairs.
