Is it ever going to warm up outside??? Anyways, I've
had some time to get caught up and I'm well under
way on Dad's 3020. It's here for a major because it
was getting pretty tired. I usually only use genuine
OEM parts but I'm thinking aftermarket. I found a
kit that is supposed to run quieter and start
better. It is made by Reliance. Would like to know
if anyone has used them and if they are good for a
tractor that will get worked hard from time to time.
Thanks guys.

All I know anymore on those 20 series Deere's is that if you go to the dealer you'll probably end up with parts from A&I anyway. That's what happened last time I needed parts for a 1020 anyway.

I did the 4020 in '08 with Deere parts. i understand that Federal Mogul makes these kits for Deere but to their standards. I had a kit from A&I a while back and was not impressed. I have a gram scale I use for grinding snowmobile clutch weights and weighed a Deere piston and the Clevite piston from A+I. The piston from A&I was about a third less mass than the Deere. Just want to know if Reliance is a decent product or if I should pay double the green for the green.

i got a reliance kit for a 4430 and the sleave and piston assembly were already put together but i had to take them apart and clean them up because they were dirty with what seemed like honing grit all over sleaves

Deere bought the remaining 64% in December 2010.

Don't believe me? Look at Page 27 in the SEC filing at THIS link (.pdf):

If the kit you are talking about is supposed to have higher compression pistons in it then they are a cheap import set. I used a set a customer just demanded to use three years ago. After two years use(about 750 hours) it started to have a lot of blow by. He brought it back to me raising cain about how "MY" overhaul did not last. I pulled it apart and the Reliant parts looked worse with 750 hours of use than the OEM ones did with 7000 hours on them.

If it is a tractor you are going to keep then go with JD parts. NOT A&I either. JD may own the company but the engine kits are different. The JD kit is still available. Some dealers are playing fast and loose with the A&I parts. They tell the customer that they are getting JD parts and give them A&I parts. The dealer can pocket the extra profit he makes on selling the A&I parts for JD price.

On some of the clutches you can not get the JD one any longer you have to go with a A&I one if you buy it at JD. I go else where when that is the case. If I am buying after market parts then I will not pay too much for them.

If you are going to keeep the tractor dont try to save a few bucks on cheap parts use OEM john deere parts. I used a reliance kit once and I can say they are garbage.
