Bought a 1940 Johnson outboard from a friend's widow. Before he passed, I remember my friend said he couldn't get it to start, just pop every now and then. Didn't think too much of it at the time-even forgot about it.
After getting the motor to my place, I was tinkering around with it. Poor thing had good compression and spark, but just wouldn't run. Tried everything I could think of. Began thinking perhaps I had a wallhanger reminder of Pete. Then, just on a whim, I put the #1 plug wire on #2 cylinder and vice-versa. I pulled the rope and that little 2.5 HP roared to life.
