One small mistake one big problem Chev 4X4

Well got the last part in today that I needed to finish up the Chev 4X4 that the transfer case fell out of. Installed the 4 wheel drive shifter and started it up. After a few minutes I had smoke rolling out from under the hood. I found the harmonic balancer was rubbing the front cross member. If I loosen the transmission cross member the problem went away. Called a guy I know and asked him if I had put the cross member in 180 out if that would cause that and he said yes. So I had to jack up the transmission and pull the cross member and turn it 180. Guess the do not make Chev 4X4 sailor proof. Oh well at least the truck is ready for the road if and when I need it

Did one better than that. Overhauling my John Deere H about 39 years ago, and got interrupted about 3 million times for other jobs. Finally got the head on and torqued down, only to realize the rods and pistons were still laying on my workbench! woops!

LOL!!...Paul...even though that happened nearly 4 decades ago, I don't believe I'd have told that one!!

Thanks for the chuckle!!

I put a new tire on my Farmall H a couple of years ago and it wasn't long before it went flat. Yep, I somehow left a tire iron inside.

I was working on a jeep transmission a long time ago. I put the slider in backwards, and had only low and reverse. How about the time I dropped the distributor lower washer off into the timing gears. The motor would not make a complete revolution. After I removed the motor and split the cases I realized my mistake and could have been fixed from the distributor hole, by removing the washer from the gears. Like someone said life is a learning experience. Stan

Oh it happens to the worst of us. I rebored a 3cyl outboard boat motor awile back, pistons in boiling water pins in the freezer, etc. put it all together the last thing was the crankcase cover that has the carbs on it. After sticking the gasket I carefully picked up the thing and underneath was six C clips that holds the wristpins in place. Yours was an easy fix.

Well at least the truck is back together so I can use it now. Only problem I may have is the gas tank is just about empty so may not even make it to town for gas LOL

Did clutch and tranny work on my nice little '48 Ford Club Coupe many years ago in my driveway in Redwood City, California. Got 'er done and all buttoned up, started her up and a heckuvva racket came out of her.......Throwout bearing was backwards......Grrrrr, had to tear her all down again, turn the bearing around and put her back together. S'okay then.....'48 Fords had a torque tube driveline, you have to lower the rearend to get torque tube back enough to remove tranny to get to throwout bearing.

Well I sort of fixed that also. He got good news from the V.A. so he was able to afford to buy a Toyota 4X4 truck on Sunday so now if he gets stuck dad may not be able to help much

Nothing that serious, but put a water pump in my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee yesterday. Cranked it up and heard an awful noise. Forgot to take the cardboard out that I had put behind the radiator to keep from knocking a hole in the radiator. No damage though.

If you put the 1-2 sliding gear in a 1066 backwards, you will have 1st and 2nd, and it will bind when going into 3rd.

Bought a 1940 Johnson outboard from a friend's widow. Before he passed, I remember my friend said he couldn't get it to start, just pop every now and then. Didn't think too much of it at the time-even forgot about it.

After getting the motor to my place, I was tinkering around with it. Poor thing had good compression and spark, but just wouldn't run. Tried everything I could think of. Began thinking perhaps I had a wallhanger reminder of Pete. Then, just on a whim, I put the #1 plug wire on #2 cylinder and vice-versa. I pulled the rope and that little 2.5 HP roared to life.
