Planting sunflowers with planter?

One of my neighbors in PA wants to plant a big patch of sunflowers next to his house,I told him I would post his question on the site. He has a JD 7000 6 row corn planter. What does he need to do to use it to plant sunflowers,or is it possible? Thanks in advance

Never done that.

I will assume his 7000 is a finger pickup, not a plate planter? 7000 came both ways.

Here are some thoughts from a different site, guess they say it both ways so not very helpful....

I used my JD 290 two row planter to plant Sunflowers, I bought the seed plate and a adaptor ring from JD worked good, here is two pics of the crop

Ah, spill the crop in. Would really have to slow the rate down compared to beans. Or do you need special flower cups? I'm sure it works tho, if flowers aren't too sensitive to spacing.

FWIW, i plant sunflowers with a matermacc (italian) vacuum planter on 36" rows with the spacing set for 2.3" for cut flowers. i don't think population is anywhere near as important as something like corn. we've also used a regular grain drill if the goal is a field of pretty flowers.

I plan to plant sunflowers and corn in alternating rows. I just need to get a plate for the sunflowers. I have a two-row JD 71 unit planter.

As it is not for combining here's what I plan to do. Use the JD cups shims and plates with #3 size seeds they are the closest to soybean size.
I will use a pretty high population because I know I will lose a lot to deer.

Larry, there are special sunflower fingers for the finger pickup meter on a 7000 planter. However, I have planted sunflowers for food plots with regular corn fingers. While it may not be optimal it will work pretty well. I would think it would work as good as, if not better than using an older plate planter. Plus, your depth control will be much, much better. Larry I to am like Mike I have planted using large flat seed and got pretty good results.
That is using a finger pick up jd 7000. Sunflower is not one of the hardest things to grow or plant.
