Char-Lynn Power Steering again

Hopefully I can get a picture loaded this time. My JD 70 has a Char-Lynn power steering unit on it. It is leaking around the seal on the shaft. I understand that it needs a quad ring instead of an O-ring. My question, it is the large end of the unit that is leaking, When I take the end off, are parts going to fall everywhere, or will it stay together so I can replace the quad ring? I'm under the impression that one end will come off easily and the other end holds everything together. Which end is this?? Chris

It is the other end that can get out of phase. Take the 4 bolts out, hold the shaft put, and pull off the collar. You can just hold the shaft there (it goes a ways into the base and won't fall out) and replace that seal that is there. There actually two - a large and small. You can do both of hose and have it done in15 minutes.

Let me know if you run into a bind. I had some problems and looked everywhere for info to help me out but came up lacking. I finally figured those things out and can be in and out of one in 5 minutes time. Great powerful torque generators. The one I just did on my M turns with one finger with the loader packed. I love those things!

Martin Fluid Power: www.mfpseals.com has Quad
rings. Sizing is the same dash numbers as O-rings
but a quad ring has more surface wear area.
Char-Lynn may still have kits available, if you
can find a part number/model number on the unit,
usually they"re stamped in somewhere
