I went to a 1-room rural school for 8 grades, then went to town for high school. Drove myself 10 miles (one way) every day, but didn't get a driver's license until I was almost ready to graudate from HS.Most of the time there were only 6-7 of us in the 1-room school and only had 14 in our HS class. I never mixed very much with the town kids as I had to hurry home and do chores or go to the field. It turned out to be better for me that way; didn't miss the peer pressure a bit. |

| Started first grade in a country school in 1951, walked to and from most days, 2-1/2 miles each way. If the weather got real bad, dad would harness the team, hook up the wagon and come get us. Went there 7-1/2 years, had the same teacher, dad bought a different farm, and we had to go to town school. Hated the first day, and would've quit after my freshman year, but dad seen to it that I went. The town kids were so rude, if I'd acted like that at home, I wouldn't be posting this today. They didn't have anything to do after school, but I looked forward to going home to help with the farming. |
