There isn't many of those left. I went to a 1 roomer from 54 till 62. If i remember right our highest student count was 14 in 8 grades.

I started in a one room school too. 30 kids grade one and two, I started in 1965. We had no kindagarden, and I was 5. After grade two the school board closed our school, and bused us to town. Talk about culture shock for us little country kids. Bruce

You're a little older.
I went to a one room from 59 - 65.
After I finished 6th grade they closed it and my little sisters had to go to town.
The building is still there but has been a home for the last 40 years.
The softball diamond is now their garden.

I went to a 1-room rural school for 8 grades, then went to town for high school. Drove myself 10 miles (one way) every day, but didn't get a driver's license until I was almost ready to graudate from HS.

Most of the time there were only 6-7 of us in the 1-room school and only had 14 in our HS class. I never mixed very much with the town kids as I had to hurry home and do chores or go to the field. It turned out to be better for me that way; didn't miss the peer pressure a bit.

Started first grade in a country school in 1951, walked to and from most days, 2-1/2 miles each way. If the weather got real bad, dad would harness the team, hook up the wagon and come get us. Went there 7-1/2 years, had the same teacher, dad bought a different farm, and we had to go to town school. Hated the first day, and would've quit after my freshman year, but dad seen to it that I went. The town kids were so rude, if I'd acted like that at home, I wouldn't be posting this today. They didn't have anything to do after school, but I looked forward to going home to help with the farming.

The one room schoolhouse for my township is a mile south of here. It is the township community building now - the water board meets there and all voting takes place there. Still has the outhouse and it is all in great shape. They boarded over the windows to save energy. I hated to see that happen. Kansas' first hotel is a mile farther south. Lincoln stayed there on his campaign trip. Rumor was that it had been on the underground railroad as well.

Love this old history. Thanks for the pic!

I went to a two-room (Horton School between Rockford and Greenvile just east of Harvard Rd. on M-57) for two years. Then we moved to Rcokford. Those seven years on the farm firmly planted my feet in the earth.

Wow, that's close to me. I went to Huggard school at Tisdel and 21 mile until high school, then was bused to Cedar Springs.

I went to a one room school in Sharon Township, Richland County, Ohio for my first three years. Then the township schools were closed and we were all bussed into town. Town school wasn't all that big, but it wasn't like the old one. Got to give those one room school teachers credit. They were miles from any help, school board members were all in the field somewhere, no principal and they still managed to teach kids, tend wounds, settle disputes, and keep general order.
