More than likely they were plowing under whatever green manure crop was there for somerfallow ground to build up nitrogen for the next crop. That was a common practice back in those days; we still did that into the early 60's.

Our black gumbo soil wouldn't scour during daylight hours some years so we ended up plowing at night. We were plowing under 6-7 ft. high sweetclover that was heavily infested with mosquitoes. No cabs on the tractors, just set there and get bitten all night. As soon as the sun came up the plows would quit scouring so we'd quit for the day and go sleep a few hours.

What's the difference in plowing in the dark than in the daylight?

Back in the mid 50's the Wheat got hailed out just as we were planting Milo. Grandpa, Dad , Uncle and I ran the WD9 With a four bottom plow 24 hours a day and plowed all the wheat ground and planted to Milo. Farming at night was nice and cool.

Good pix! Interesting to look at the different types of soil. The last photo must have been for a promo or some such as I never saw a real farmer plowing while wearing a tie. Looks like he is wearing dress pants also. OR Is he the one from "Green Acres"?
Kinda comical what shows up in older photographs.

My G-dad was a large animal vet, and always wore a tie and a white shirt. Never did figger out if the tie was to wipe the tobacco juice or the manure off...

The silverking in the middle is interesting.The drawbar and support is removed and a lift plow installed.Seems to be an r44 model with the old style wheels and no wheel hub covers.
