Just came in from the new house; I just got done rough-sanding about 700 sq.ft. of red oak floor. I was using a four-pad random orbital rental sander from HD. It is the most user-unfriendly machine I've ever used; it's like holding a bull yearling by the hind legs. It fights you the entire time. At 72, I'm too old for this kind of stuff. Probably won't need my Ambien tonight.

Two more courses of paper tomorrow, then hopefully put on stain on Friday. Polyurethane this weekend maybe. I find myself wondering why I'm going to this trouble on a floor that will end up mostly covered by rugs, beds, furniture, and, since it's my daughter's, dirty clothes, shoes, junk and clutter. (Sigh.)

I thought you was supposed to get smarter the older you get. I am trying to replace the masonite wall around the tub in an old trailer house. Called a carpenter last year to have him come over and do it. Never showed. I can see why now. Wondering if I should have even attempted it.

@ Retired Farmer:

Unless it's badly buckled or full of dry-rot, do like I did - sand it to remove any paint, thoroughly seal it with Thompson's Water Seal, and then cover it with tile. When your done, nobody will ever know that there is Masonite there.

Geez, Jerry! It will look beautiful - but that's one heck of a job. You are going to feel it today.

I watched my husband do our wood floors three years ago at age 49 (he said never again). Not fun, a beast of a machine. Not fun for him to wrestle it up the five stairs leading into our house either.

I know how you feel! Due to the storm Sunday there was no church so I spent seven hours working on the floors there. I spray buffed with our brand new floor machine then put down two coats of finish on about 2500 square feet. Most of it got a third coat and some high traffic areas got four.

Absolute worst machine I ever operated was a sod cutter. I got stuck with it because my entire crew refused.

But, that was 30 years ago, I imagine they're improved some by now.
