John B is sick,anybody remember mom making chicken soup when they were sick? My mom made it from what they call stewing hens,They are hard to find around here in nj now.
 
No,but my wife makes it a lot. She made it the night that my appendix ruptured after I had already been sick as a dog from it all day.
I couldn't stand the smell of it cooking for a lot of years after that. Still makes me a little naucious to smell it,but I can eat a little bit of it again now and then.
 
Oh yes Mom all ways fixed it. Even the neighbors bought over Home made Chicken Soup last week when we were sick. I sent the pot back and told them it needed to be refilled. Ha Ha
 
Sure do remember that.

I make a pretty mean chicken soup, myself.

Mom also made creamed chicken and homemade noodles and served it over mashed potatoes. Really good, but I have never made the noodles - not much for rolling out stuff.
 
Chicken broth was the first things we got, to see if we could keep anything down after being sick.
 
BIG RUH is right. It doesn't necessarily have to be a "stewing hen". A lot of those were just very mature hens and had more fat on them. I use whatever is available in the freezer. Roaster, Leg quarters, split breast, etc.
 
My favorite from my Mom was homemade split pea soup with the ham bone!
Went to the Dr. at the hospital today and when I got out I was hujngry so I stopped in the cafiteria and they had a big pot brewing. It was tasty and reminded me of My Moms.
 
With the big blizzard coming, yesterday I made a big pot of black bean and chipotle pepper in adobo sauce chile. This recipe includes taters, JD sausage, and corn. Very good. Ma7ybe one too many peppers. They are pretty narly.
 
That was one thing that my mother made that I couldn't get enough of. Put enough crackers in it so I could eat it with a fork and a piece of bread with about a half inch of butter on it. Now that's good eatin!

I make soup from mean chickens, nice chickens, any kind of chickens, roosters included.
