Not a good time to find out your lock outs do not lock in

Well went to pull the boy out of where he got stuck trying to go to work. Found out the hard way that the lock outs are not locking in. Think it is the driver side since I jacked up one side right and the drive shaft spun but the right wheel did not but saw the drive going to the left side was spinning but the wheel was on the ground. Jacked up the left side and play with the lock out and could tell that it did not sound right. So I guess I need to pull the lock out off and see why it does not lock in. By the way yes I had one rear wheel off the ground
 
Are they manual lock outs, we used to have a lot of trouble with the auto matics, grease would get stiff in them
 
Ya got him pulled out with no problems didn't even have to pull him very hard he was just sitting on a small down hill on ice so the Toyota front wheel drive just spun
 
Ah but instructions on this is not going to help the problem is inside the manual lock out so have to open it up and hope it is just ice
 
Manual lock out. When I had the left wheel up and turned it from free to lock and back with it in gear you could feel it trying to go in but not going. I am hoping it is just some ice but probably not likely since I did pour hot water on it
 
I think it is Dynatrack who makes a locking hub that locks when it fails. Not the best for the most part, but at least if you still need 4x4 you still got it.
 
That's why I carry a pair of drive flanges behind the seat for everything with manual locking hubs I own. Couple of minutes with an allen wrench and two picks and I can have drive flanges installed for worry free use.
 
They used to freeze in my jeep cj5 when I was a kid. Could always get them popped in by engaging them, back up and lock the brakes hard while rolling backwards. Never failed. Of course if you were already immobile, you were in trouble.
