Jeep pickups

Some what off topic, but seeing the picture of the older Jeep in rrlunds ad,got me thinking,a couple of my dads friends had that older style Jeep pickup, and they were really good trucks. My dad bought a used 1963 jeep pickup a long time ago.It had an overhead cam 6 and he didnt like it too much,The older pickups seemed better if I remember right, but it was a long time ago.

I had a J10. Mechanically it was a good truck but the body was junk. Too many places to hold water and it rusted big time.

I have had two. The first my Grandfather gave me was a j20 it wasa great truck but rusted away to nothing. The second I bought from a coworker was a quadratrac j10 in great shape. I got a guilt trip from family to sell it to my useless brother who didnt have a vehicle and had a newborn. I had four trucks at the time so I sold it to him cheap. He turned around and sold it within a couple of weeks for a nice profit and still had no vehicle, blew the money. Lesson learned I guess. I would love to have another. Theres an older farmer near Gate city Va. that has a super nice j20 I see occasionally but he's not interested in selling it.

I just spent the last few months with a Gladiator in my shop with the OHC engine. Block based on a continental 6, head slightly more advanced. I suppose they were okay for the time. The problem is that at the time they were slow and simple, now they are old, slow and obsolete. You can figure out how to make it go faster with taller tires or an overdrive. That just leaves you figuring out how to make it turn taller tires with no power stearing and how to make it stop with tiny, non power assist drums. Not a split master cyl,or even finned drums. It had to use a hydraulic clutch to accomadate frame to body movement and its about as loud as any tractor with a steel cab. They are good looking though.

The front end on the Jeep Gladiator looks like it was lifted from a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. There is a man in the town close to me that has a Jeep COE. Which are somewhat rare I think. I don't know what series designation it is but I don't think he ever drives it, it just sits in his yard.

When I was a kid, Dad had a FC-170. A year or two ago Jeep was going to bring them back as a concept vehicle. I don't know if they ever put them into production. Haven't seen one on the road. Old Jeep trucks, to include the FCs were rust buckets. Ran well and could go places off road, rust buckets though.

Have a friend that bought an M715 a couple of years ago, redoing the whole thing, except metal top instead of canvas, and he put an Olds diesel in it. Don't know why he picked an Olds diesel, but its his and he did.

i have a 64 pikup here ,that ohc cam sure makes thnat 6 run good ,,.. has less than 100 k miles , just red-koted the tank ,

I've got a '78 J10 with the 360 V8 AMC engine, and a manual transfer case. I've also got an 8000 lb Warn, worm gear winch on the front bumper, which I built out of 6" channel iron and some heavy wall square tubing. Over the years I've pulled out quite a few stuck vehicles, with the worst being Dad's 440IC Deere dozer. It got stuck in mud level with the tracks, trying to unstick a backhoe that couldn't dig itself out... if that tells you how bad it was. I had the rear bumper (also 6 inch channel) chained to a tree and the winch hooked to the dozer blade. Before the dozer came unstuck the Jeep was completely up in the air, suspended between the chain and the cable. In other words it's ONE TOUGH TRUCK.

Unfortunately, as others have said, it's a rust bucket due to the numerous places that hold all of the mud and gunk that find their way into places like that when using the truck like it was intended to be used. It's a shame because it, to me, it's a beautiful, but tough looking body style. There used to be one near me that had been restored and it was one of the best looking trucks I've ever seen.

I scrapped a 1957 FC-170..it was too rusty to
save. The 226,Cubic inch 6 cyl engine, built
for Willys by Contenental, will go in my 1951 Willys 3/4 ton pickup.
I have the FC-170 axles, DANA 53 front, Timken
Spirel bevel type rear, 5/something, ratio.
Free to anyone who pick them up, for use,not
scrap!

my son in law had one of those F C models at one time a 64 i think. seemed like maybe a in line six not sure of that. had a pick up style bed with a wrecker boom. it ran good but was not very fast

I remember when those FC 170s came out and were being advertized on TV. As a 14 year old I thought that they were really something.

My dad has one it's an 83 j20 with amc 360 and the GM 400 Trans we use it as a plow truck for the farm it's tired worn out and is a pile of rust since it spent it's whole life as a plow truck for a school district before we got it

I know where there are 2 FC170's, one with the dual rears set up and a Willys wagon. Guy won't part with them- yet.
