case IH 885 Trans problem

I have a Case IH 885 with the xl cab, I am having
trouble getting it in fourth gear - pretty sure I
have an internal problem. Anyone else have similar
issues? Do I have to remove the cab to get to top of
transmission? Or can I possibly lift it up 6 inches
or so? HELP!! The dealer says it could cost me about
a third of the value of the tractor for them to
repair it, so I dont want to do that!

the cab has to come off, the tractor has to be split in 3 sections. Ive done a few of these, not and easy job. dealer was right about a third value of the tracror

Might just be the shift linkage, I had a loose bolt on the shift linkage on our 495 (same basic trans layout) and it would jam in 4th and was fickle shifting gears, was just a loose bolt.

Tractor was ROPS, so just a matter of popping the trans tunnel cover...can't remember if there is an access plate in the Xl cab under the floor covering or not.

I had a Case 885. Never had any shifting problems. Sounds like to me if you had internal problems you would have them in every gear especially if it were a broken shift fork. Since it's in 4th gear which is the end of the travel for both the shift lever and the rest of the linkage I would say it's a worn external linkage part.

Hi, will it shifted into 4th if the T/A is in Lo or if the tractor is moving?
Later models had electric T/A that also was connected to the clutch neutral switch and when clutch was depressed the T/A would switch into Lo.
This was supposed to make shifting easier.
Also possibility the cab has shifted or somethings is jamming the shifting lever.

Thanks for the replies, No TA, Looks like the linkage is out of adjustment a little, so I took 3 and 4 shift rod off and could get it in 1 and 2 gears fine, so took 1 & 2 shift rod off and could get it in third but not fourth. Didnt see any thing loose or that appeared wrong with linkage other than the slight adjustment problem, but I will check it much closer tomorrow.
Thanks Again for all of the help.
