OT/sciatic nerve

My sciatic nerve on the right side has bothered me for years. I had been seeing a chiropractor which helped some. About 4 or 5 months ago it just stopped. Hooray!

Then I decided it was time to clean stalls. All the bending and shoveling set it off again. Been a real pain for about a month.

Last week end I went on a trail ride with my good friend, Alice, who is a massage therapist. I asked her if she could work on it.

She did. She was using her elbow and it hurt like @#%@* and I finally had to say uncle. It ached for a while, but not the same way and not constant, more like a sore muscle. Now it doesn't hurt at all.

For those of you with sciatic problems, I would recommend you find a massage therapist. 10 minutes with Alice did more than 2 yrs at the chiropractor.

Good for you. I have heard that they can be helpful for that kind of thing. I was changing a water filter a few years ago for an older neighbor who told me "I pinched my psychotic nerve. Have you ever heard of that?"

My wife had a lot of problem with it in her early forties. Hurt so bad she couldn't hardly function. Finally had it operated on and has been fine ever since. That was over twenty years ago. I myself would not risk going under the knife except as a last resort such as in her case. Seems like too many people I have known go in for a simple operation and have a major unexpected problem come up as a result.

I had those troubles 15 years ago. Never had anything hurt so bad in all my life. I couldn't get any relief. Finally I had an appointment with a physical therapist who had me do different stretching exercises. All pain was gone in a week. and still pain free. Sciatic pain that is.

My pain came on suddenly, in mid December. Worst that i"ve ever had! Doc gave me a subscription
for 2 hydrocodone with tylonal every 4 hours, a
bottle of 100, with 2 refills. Now, Feb 19th, i"m
down to 1/2 every 8 hours, but almost out,20 left of 300, see the Doc next week..gonna need more!

I'm so proud of these guys! They're really getting civilized- Not one mentioned any other theraputic benefits of "10 minutes with Alice". And I only pointed it out so as to prevent anyone from doing so.

I think we can attribute the civilization of the masses to the 3 most influential ladies on the board- Nancy, SweetFeet. . . and Kim.

Had that happen a few years back also. Went to a chiropractor and it took care of it. He said a big cause of it in men is sitting on their wallet or having one stuffed to full in the back pocket putting pressure on it. I had a real bad back pain one time and went to a chiropractor for probably 6 treatments. Each time it got worse. He always really worked this one spot he thought was out of place. I finally went to a back specialist who did an xray and MRI on it. He showed me the spot the guy had been working on. It was a spur that was all inflamed from all the pressure the guy was applying on it. Back pain was from disc degeneration. He gave me exercises to do and that helped. The physical-message therapist was a wonder worker though. I would go to one of those any day before a chiropractor.

Nancy, I read this post this morning on my spartphone but couldn't post a reply till now. Marilyn's sister had sciatic nerve problems but I don't know what flared it up. A lot of different things can flare it up.

Anyway, the chiro couldn't do anything for it and neither could the medical doctor. Both of them just shrugged their shoulders and told her she would have to live with it. Out of desperation she went to a massage therapist and he cured her. I think his specialty was sports therapy of some sort. Anyway, it worked for her. Hope you get relief soon. Jim

Nancy,

My dad had sciatic troubles and massage helped him too.

My SIL is a massage therapist - so she gives him a big discount in price.

I, too, had Terrible sciatic problem for about a year; tried everything; a friend had a book on Reflexology (where you rub the right spot on your foot and your sinus will drain!); friend said look here: there is a spot between your heel and arch where the sciatic Ends. Rub that spot & presto. I said bunk, friend rubbed spot and this is about 16 years hence and knock on wood presto. By the way there was a hard lump about pea size on that foot area; friend hit that nodule & you probably heard me yelp in Texas, I was in PA.
