Cursive writing/ Family history

Some of the posts on this forum have me concerned for the future. Recently we have seen many pictures of old ways of farming, all of them a reminder of how things used to be. We have also had posts about old family history, often written in a family Bible, and passed down through the years. There will also be farm records, perhaps in the farm office, or up in the attic, or in the basement.Other posts have descrbed how schools no longer teach cursive writing and kids cannot read it. In years to come, how will they be able to study the history of the country if they cannot read it?
I am in England, where at the moment we don't have such policies in education, but it is something to be aware of over here, and I think
maybe the USA government should perhaps think again about education policies.
If I have offended Miss Kim with these thoughts, I will quite understand if this gets poofed.

I struggled with Penmanship in grade school, but gradually improved. My Dad had much better hand writing than I ever achieved - and he could switch hands in the middle of a sentence and you couldn't tell the difference. Unfortunately, none of us kids inherited that.

I have complained for years that schools never taught kids about handling money. I was pleased to find out that our local schools now have on-going classes to teach kids to handle money; the classes start in 2nd grade and continue through high school.

Dick, thats a good idea. It had never occurred to me, but with the economy of the world as it is, kids DO need to be taught how to handle their money.
They will need to know how to negotiate the best deals on new tractors and equipment.

My parents had a vegetable stand every summer thru my years and fortunately my daughter and son got to help them thru their teen years. One thing they learned was how to make change. Our daughter would come home from high school and say how most of the other students didn't know how to make change. Math was never my best subject but I did develop a method for figuring change in my head. Knowing what my charge was and knowing what amount I was giving them I was able to figure it out very quickly with just a few calculations in my head. For today those who work at any cash register they only know what to give back by what the register tells them to. It's sad to see that our social interaction, manners, morals are changing.

I think cursive writing is as outdated as a typewriter. I think most people email or text message now and don't actually write anything on paper. What I hate is the trend to abbreviate the English language to make text messaging easier. It's chopped up so much I can't read it at all.

Indeed, some (many?) schools no longer teach cursive.

Watching the hysteria some day will certainly be interesting.

I think this is a great idea, but I'm afraid it won't be too many years until we see the demise of money. With online banking-credit cards -debit cards -etc.cash is getting used less every day.I know people that carry no cash at all.

have been trying to read some old letters from the 1800's that are in cursive. it is like reading a language of the lost tribes.

I had problems with my third grade teacher, who didn"t like me. One of the problems was with penmanship. She wanted us to write with lots of flourishes and fancy curli-cues, which seemed stupid to me. My cursive writing was and is very readable, but is much simpler and faster than what that teacher wanted. She gave me the only D I ever got on a report card. For penmanship.

No other teacher ever complained about how I wrote.

Is cursive writing necessary in primary school now? I don"t know if it is worth spending a whole lot of time on. But kids should be able to read and write cursively. Oh but wait! Lots of kids come out of primary school unable to read or write printing.

Schools need to figure out how to do better.
