anyone ever hear the plowing term cutting and covering or cutin and coverin ? means the plow is not set right. heard old timers say this.

I remember my dad talking about certain neighbors inability to plow good straight furrows, or having the plow set so it didn't cover right, or in old sod maybe the slabs of sod setting up and not rolled over.

Even with modern plows, working up sod was a pain.

Any Kverneland plows back in farming country? They were real popular here, back when folks were actually farming. Orange and green, realllll long shares that just didn't give the sod any choice but to turn over.

Kverneland is one of the most popular plows here in Europe. I didn't know they were that rare in the US. Owned by Kubota now but still manufactured in Norway.

jic, As far as I am concerned Cut-it and Covering meant to me was... referrers to a Oneway plow ....You had Farmed up and got a piece land ready to sow in the Spring, (really disked deep and a nice seed bed was ready!) Got a heavy rain, or rainy spell and the little weeds started sticking their little weed heads out of the ground! Problem is you need to re-plow, but Not Deep! set the Oneway disk... shallow about 1 in deep run in a higher gear to cut most of the weeds, and cover the rest. (Farmall M, 4th gear mid to 3/4 throttle) You don't want to loose the soil moisture by deep plowing. Just stir the top 1 in or so of the soil so you can sow Sudan, Redtop Cane or whatever in short order and get that crop going.
I recall doing it 2 or 3 times growing up as a kid!
Yes the next time you plowed that field, more care had to be exercised to get all the little ridges and such out.
So essentially it is a way to replow a piece of land to get a crop planted! and save your moisture.... at least here in Central Texas. Just my understanding of the term and how it relates to Me!

PS,
We had a Farmall M Dad bought a brand new JD 8 ft cut tiller series Oneway, Hydrolic lift on rubber tires W/ the stinger tail wheel. It did a really nice job in the Lampasas river sand that was my Dads home place.

Around here when someone was speaking of cuttin' and coverin' it was somebody who had too much plow and too little tractor and were plowing rather shallow and just rolling the top few inches of dirt.
