CAT C6.6 in an old topkick?

Anybody think it will fit? My old boss has a mid 80`s GMC topkick with the 8.2 detroit in it, and likes the truck and wants to repower it. He has been looking for a 3208T, because he knows it will fit. There is a C6.6 here for sale with low hours, and I am not close enough to the truck to take some measurements.

Beware even trying to repower with a 3208. If a topkick is like a C70, there is a lot of work to do. Been there tried that and failed.

Cab had to be raised, found the cab mounts in a junkyard and paid dearly for them.

Accessory drives will be a pain unless the 3208 comes from a Chevy/GMC.

Then there is the matter of the engine itself. On an 8.2 Detroit, the left bank is forward of the right bank, gives clearance at the firewall for the left head. On a 3208, the RIGHT bank is forward and the left head hits the firewall before the motor supports will hook up. I wasn"t willing to take a torch to the one I was working on, so abandoned the project and put in a reman 8.2. Found out later, there is a factory plate that covers the hole the factory cuts for LH head clearance.

I don't imagine any repower of that truck would be easy... but if I was going through the trouble I'd find a good used Cummins B from a bus and put that in it. Second choice would be an older IH DT466. REgardless I'd want to know roughly what engine speed it needs to run presently to make 60 mph. If it can't do it in the 2200 range you'd better stick to one of the older faster turning v8 engines or plan on a rear end swap to get a faster rear. THe fuel pincher probably turns about 2800...

Sounds like finding a parts truck would be about the only way to do the 3208 swap. I would just as soon do the C6.6 over a cummins, I have had good luck with the smaller cats, and would be about the same amount of work as the cummins.
