home built power steering. HELP

I'm putting PS on my IH350U. I'm pulling what hair I have left out. Hydraulic pressure from original pump. From steering motor to underseat resevoir. Hoses to left and right steering cylinders. I can't get it to work. I have pressure to the motor, flow to the resevoir. If I lift front of tractor it will turn the wheels. On the ground, no way. Steering motor is a sauer danfoss. Ports are: Pressure, Tank, Left, & Right. On the side of body is a smaller port. It has flow when the wheel is turned. I have that running back to resevoir. I'm stumped. Any and all comments and suggestions and questions welcomed.

If the steering is plumed into the original pump before the steel line goes into the seat reservoir, that line has bno real pressure in it till a demand is placed on the hydraulics in the valve block (right Side of reservoir) If you have two or three control handles on the right side of the seat, and if one of them is currently not connected to anything, try dead heading that valve while turning the steering. Moving the lever causes demand. Demand causes pressure. Pressure causes steering.
If the tractor had PS originally, it should be plumbed into that system. If not you need a 350U steering priority valve to go in the front stack of valves. that would be then connected to the motor making pressure on demand. (350U owner) Jim

Ok. I can wrap my head around that. Tractor does not have factory PS. Tractor does not have extra valve block. Only one to run the rear lift. So I will need a spare valve block and a priority valve to make this work? I should also mention that the rear lift doesn't work asI have it plumbed now. However if I bypass the steering setup the rear lift works fine. I have a loader on this tractor that is powered by a PTO pump and seperate resevoir. Maybe tie into that somehow. Loader tractor without power steering is not working for my old body anymore.

Try using the existing (connected) lever to dead head the system to see if we are on track. Lift (or lower) the hitch toi the limit when trying to steer. If joy, that priority valve is in your future. Many are available for that tractor or 300U with PS. The system is not open centered. it is a demand based pressure system with a pilot valve sensing demand and turning on pressure. Jim

I did try moving the lever to the full up and the full down position. Unfortunately no improvement. And the lift wouldn't function. Thanks for all the info.

I would double check to see if the small port you mention really needs to be hooked up. If it has flow when you turn the wheel and you have a line from there to the reservoir the oil could be going back to the reservoir instead of the steering cylinder.

As it is now your PS unit is doing two things. it is bleeding off low pressure flow, and it is before the pilot valve thus not allowing system pressure to be controlled. This prevents the hitch from working.
Either purchase a IH power steering priority valve and hoses from a PS equipped 300 or 350U.
or buy a seperate priority valve with flow at or greater than your PTO pump. place that in the output of your PTO pump and steering to the PS unit the output port to the loader. Jim
