I'd quit before

Anybody ever threatened to quit farming before you'd do something?
I was reading a CaseIH ad this morning for the teir 4 engines, got me to thinking about all the times I've threatened to quit farming before I'd do that.
Like I'd quit before I'd put in a bulk tank and stop shipping canned milk.
I'd quit before I'd pay over a dollar a gallon for gas or diesel.
I'd quit before I'd take a test and get certified just to buy and use pesticides.
I'd quit before I'd pay $50 a bag for seed corn.
I'm sure there've been a hundred other empty threats like that, but those just popped in to my mind real quick. A person changes their mind in a hurry when it comes right down to where the rubber hits the road I guess.

I'll quit when the govt tells me to, and it seems that day gets closer and closer with all their rules......

I got a friend like that, he quits every year for the last 43 years. I tell him to go ahead back to punching a timeclock like he did in 1966 he is still farming.

Dad quit about 1971 when he realized He made good living with all the things he did to cover what he lost farming. In 73 he realized he could pay for a house with what it was costing him for gas to commute back and forth to town. So we moved.

Aint that the truth. Most of us have no idea just how intertwined we are with government. From pricing to subsidies to regulation compliance to conservation programs to farmland preservation and the list goes on and on and on.
Government has done a heck of a job wrapping their tentacles around our means of food production. It was inevitable when the # US dept. of Ag employees exceeded the total # of farmers in the US back in the 1970s. Now it's extremely difficult to farm without gov't's nose in your business one way or another.

I did quit in 1991.

I said afterward that two of the happiest days of my life were the day I started farming and the day I quit.

Last fall the local gossip was that rent would be $1000 per acre this year. I wouldn't quit but I would rent my farm out and maybe bale a little hay out of the meadows to stay busy.

(quoted from post at 11:13:08 01/25/13) My dad said that about the bulk tank. And then he quit.

LOL my dad too. He was 65 and he said at his age he wasn't borrowing money to add a milk house and bulk tank.

I said it,but then I just kept buying bigger ones til I finally sold the cows 9 years ago.

Relative of mine was joking a few years ago, he'd rent out the farm if someone offered $500 an acre rent to him. His brother (farm together) said he better be quiet, were getting to where someone will take you up on that.

And I think it's pretty close, I hear of over $400 rents in the area....

Back in the mid 1980s the bank offered the farm across the road to dad for $900 an acre - to buy it. In December land just a mile away, same stuff, sold for $12,000 an acre.

If the feds keep at it, you WILL quit because all products will be produced outside of the US.

Your comments remind me of old friends that are smokers. "I will quit if and when it gets to $2 per pack", then it was $3, and on and on. A few are dead now.
Smoking must be a super great feeling to have to spend good money to kill yourself.
Never did understand that.

What's your point.
Plenty people die daily who never smoked..
