I was reading a CaseIH ad this morning for the teir 4 engines,got me to thinking about all the times I've threatened to quit farming before I'd do that. Like I'd quit before I'd put in a bulk tank and stop shipping canned milk. I'd quit before I'd pay over a dollar a gallon for gas or diesel. I'd quit before I'd take a test and get certified just to buy and use pesticides. I'd quit before I'd pay $50 a bag for seed corn. I'm sure there've been a hundred other empty threats like that,but those just popped in to my mind real quick. A person changes their mind in a hurry when it comes right down to where the rubber hits the road I guess. [Reply]   [No Email]

"I will quit if and when it gets to $2 per pack", then it was $3, and on and on. A few are dead now. Smoking must be a super great feeling to have to spend good money to kill yourself. His brother (farm together) said he better be quiet, were getting to where someone will take you up on that. And I think it's pretty close, I hear of over $400 rents in the area.... Back in the mid 1980s the bank offered the farm across the road to dad for $900 an acre - to buy it. In December land just a mile away, same stuff, sold for $12,000 an acre. Paul [Reply]  [No Email]

In 73 he realized he could pay for a house with what it was costing him for gas to commute back and forth to town. So we moved. Ron [Reply]  [No Email]

Most of us have no idea just how intertwined we are with government. From pricing to subsidies to regulation compliance to conservation programs to farmland preservation and the list goes on and on and on. Government has done a heck of a job wrapping their tentacles around our means of food production. It was inevitable when the # US dept. of Ag employees exceeded the total # of farmers in the US back in the 1970s. Now it's extremely difficult to farm without gov't's nose in your business one way or another. [Reply]  [No Email]
