after reading below post ,, my folx always taught to keep0 a canister of morton salt nearthe furnace , in the event of chimney fire pour salt on the fire,. only had couple chimney fire here ,, poured on the salt and things began to be somewhat controlled ,not sure why and IF THIS REALLY WORX,if there is a science behind this? can anyone offer an explanation ?,, stay warm folx,, btw ,, i was born in a old 1840s farm house ,, that Pop claimed "only way to keep it warm was to set the place on fire "

I believe heating salt gives off chlorine gas and that displaces the oxygen retarding the combustion. I don't know if that is the exactly how it happens but it is probably close.

Throwing a bucket of dry sand on the fire would do more good. Then blast a 5 pound CO2 extinguisher into the stove and seal up tight.
The salt is an old wive's tale and should be pounded up the appropriate orfice of those who think it's an extinguisher.

The salt idea maybe a wives tale but I have seen it work more than once. Besides in the dirty thirties who was rich enough to own a fire extinguisher. Not in this part of the country. Sand would work too cause it would smother the oxygen off.

sand is also a good idea,.and i suppose dead ash bucket could help as well ... that last parting comment is not very nice response ,, there is a science in the salt that ande touched on ..
