I'm looking for help with MD style TA. I installed one in an IH 856 when the engine is started with both transmissions in neutral I get a gear clash sound. If the tractor is throttled up or the TA is shifted into low the sound quitens down. If the clutch is pushed in it is also quite so I'm sure it's not in the pto drive. Would the pressure from the MC valve have any effect on this?

I have a question, when TA was taken apart, was the nut on the counter shaft very loose. They usually are. This allows the gears to make a pattern of mesh. When you put the gears back in and tighten that nut down really tight, the gears seek a different pattern. HY CAPACITY had so many complaints about this noise that they came up with a different recommended procedure which uses some shims on some occasions to try to get the gear back into the original wear pattern. They also tighten nut differently which I notice a lot of guys on these forums do not agree with. Other problem may be the spring loaded dampner in the main clutch. They can make a transmission sound like it it coming apart. Either one of these problems do no harm but sound bad. I'm not saying this is your problem but it may very well be.

Is the TA he is working on (he said MD) a mechanical diode brand? if so it may have a ratchet like one way clutch that will always make that sound. I am sure out on a limb here, but thought of it. Jim

That shimming is to compensate for shimming the Quill . And to quiet the gear noise when tightening up the lower shaft nut you want to tighten it up tight then back off and SNUG it just a little then drill a 1/8th hole thru the nut and lower shaft and install a 1/8th x1/4 roll pin . been doing that for years and have had vary good luck with it and quiet gears.

It is a mechanical diode TA. I inspected the hydraulic pump on
the mcv it has a lot of wear probably leaking more than its
pumping. Is there a chance that low pressure would not shift
the TA into high completely and let it try to pull on both sides?

That is what I do also, but a lot of guys want to torque the snot out of that nut. Didn't want to get into any big arguments. Then I will add that if you checked those shafts that have been tightened as tight as you can get them, by pulling the lower cover off after a thousand hours, those spacer will be nice and free again as everything finally worked back into place. Maybe that will start some arguments.
As far as the diode style, never even saw one. They just came out with them when I left CASEIH dealer so can't speak to them specifically.
