As some will rember I built a small electric kart labled cockshutt 5. Replaced the deep discharg marine batteries with 8 volt golft cart batteries from Interstates Blemished stock. Also bought 6 volt deep discharge . The 2 8 volts really wakes up the home madr electric motor. Not sure how to charge. When charging the old 6 volts the voltage would show 16 volts. I do have voltmeater on this creation with just push button. Would I be better off using one 8 volt and the 6 volt in series? My charger always show at least 14.5 when charging then 16 when totaly charged. As a heads up Interstate distrubiation stores sell blemished batteries The 8 volt golfcart and deep discharg 6 cost 50.00 with one year warrenty. regular 12 and 6 batteries cost 40.00

Bill, Do I understand, you want to design a charger to charge two 8 volt batteries in series, 16v? What kind of charger do you currently have, how many volts?
George

I cant figure exactly what youre tryin neighbor, if the "tractor" has a 24 volt motor,Id use three eight volters (or four sixes) in series to run it.

Yes it will work to keep adding voltages with series batteries, but Id prefer them allllll the same i.e. all identical 8 volters or 6 volters for best long term results.

Charging,,,,,,,,if its three eights, a charger voltaGE might be in the 26 to 30 volt range. You could stick a 36 volt golf cart charger on for short periods but dont overcharge them.....

Headed to the Jan Florida Flywheelers tomorrow, show runs Wed to Sat, we will stay in RV until next monday. I have 110 Gallons of fresh water on board,,,,,,,460 amp hrs of battery storage (4 golf cart batteries series/paralell) Onan 4 KW Genset.......Its 6+ days of dry camping no hook ups so 6 days is gonna stretch it lol

Yes charg 2 eight volt. Batt. Have 6----12---&24volt chargers. The so called motor. I built. Is. All. 12. Volt parts. Thanks guye

Bill, keep in mind what I'm going to tell you I've never done before. Try putting a 6v charger in series with a 12v charger. Say you connect the negative of a 12v charger to the negative of your 16v battery. Connect the positive of the 12v charger to the negative of the 6v charger. Tape over the connection. Then put the positive of the 6 v charger to the positive of the 18v battery. Plug in both chargers. Make sure the amps don't exceed the current rating of your smallest charger. In theory, keep in mind in theory, this should work. Both of the chargers will have to be manual chargers. Don't think smart chargers will work. Again, I've never done this before.

Usually it takes about 12 plus hours charging at 20 amps to charge golf cart batteries, depending on how far down they are. You will need to watch to make sure you don't over charge. Use a hydrometer to determine the charge.

Let us know if this crazy idea works. I don't know if there is an 18v charger on the market.

Perhaps others know of one.

George

Hello George Marsh,
There is or was ,such a thing as a multiple volts charger.
I had one at work, 6 to 36 V 10 amps.
The beast had a huge transformer and two bulbs as rectifiers, I don't remember the make though.
I'm sure they don't make them anymore. Have not seen one since.
Guido.

Guido,
Thomas Edison invented the first diode before the light bulb. It was a tube, like you are discribing. I think Columbus brought one over on the Mayflower and traded it to the Indians.

I've never seen a Variable voltage charger.

I've known Bill for a while. He likes to make some totally different things out of what he has available. Once I saw he put a Briggs on top of the lower end of a 25 hp Johnson outboard. Don't know if it ever worked.

It will be interesting to see if a 6v and 12v charger will charge 18v battery.
George

Hello George Marsh,

Yes more like a tube then a bulb. I have the amp meter that was part of a unit just like the one I described. May be there is a manufacturer name on it. I'll have to dig it out.

Guido.

Guido,
I think Columbus used charger like you described to charge the batteries to power up his GPS.

Wonder where you would find vacuum tube diodes today?

If your diodes go south, contact me. I have huge solid state diodes I've had for years just waiting for a big charger.
George

Hello George Marsh,
Thanks for the offer, i'll sure take you up on it, as more often then not,I a let all the smoke out of things. I have collected many old board components as well, diodes, power resistors, caps, and many still have the smoke in them. Anyhow I'll look for the amp meter and post a picture for you. The base of that tube-bulb had a screw in base just like a bulb, and the top had a rod from the center were a wire with a spring clip attached to the thing. There were two of them in the charger. I don't have a picture of the beast though..............
