Buickanddeere Windfarms ?

I understand that you are near some windfarms in your area. Are you close enough to them to have an opinion on any adverse effects caused by them ? We are involved in a new windfarm near the shores of Lake Erie, (4 miles from Nanticoke G.S.) Many who are not financially involved are REALLY upset with the prospects of having them nearby. Just wondering !!

there's about a 100 of um east of me 50 mi.s , and they sure are not a perty site to see , at night the red warning light all blink at same time -- kind of errrery

They put up 88 of them four miles from me in Wyoming County. I can't see them from my place but going on Rt29 north, they are on top of all the hills. With that and all of the gas drilling, the country is filling up. I can't say that they improve the view. Ed

I worked on one wind farm here in Texas. Large, noisy, waste of space. If they catch on fire. About all you can do is watch it burn

As Ed said, the largest wind farm in PA (88 wind mills) is close to him. From my property I can see at least 83 of them. At night the top of the mtn is flashing red, FAA warning lights. I have been on the wind farm site several times. They had people working full time relocating the Rattle snakes that would come into the work site during construction. I don't know what the long term outcome of the wildlife will be.

Got em all around me in central Illinois. Come get as many as you want. I don't have any real close to me, but they are eyesores on the landscape. As soon as the government stops subsidizing 90%, you won't see any more going up. We have been able to stop 2 farms around here. Hopefully there won't be anymore.

There are a lot of complaints in the Ontario Farmer newspaper about them. They keep people from sleeping because they make noise from the fan blades, and seem to cause a lot of health problems, which of course the government denies. Properties near them drop in value drastically. They are also not a very efficient way to make power. When there is high winds they have to be stopped for safety, and if one of those things ever falls off it's tower it's going to make a mess. I don't live anywhere near them but I drive through some when I go south to see family. It is kind of neat to drive through them and watch them operate, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere near them.

Must be 200 of 'em north of US30 between Van Wert, OH and the Indiana line. So far as I know only one has caught fire and burned. I'm no accountant, but a 50 year payback on a machine with a 20 year life doesn't sound ral good.

There is probably going to be a lot more of them. Vestus has a prop factory south of Severence, Co. Probably around two hundred acres stuffed full of blades for the towers. Saw several train loads of them go out last summer.

This issue always makes me wonder about people and their expectations. We all want good, reliable, cheap power. Well, we can't burn oil because of CO2 and cost and gas is dangerous and we can't drill to get it and the pipes mess up the view and coal, dear Lord, NOT COAL, no, no a thousands times no! we can't ever burn coal and hydro is terrible because it dams a river and some people lose their homes and other gain lake front and make a killing, and we can't use big solar arrays, especially in areas with lots of sun because the shade cools the ground and creates a micro climate and the rare earth minerals needed are mined and that pollutes the erf, and you can't use wind at all on land because you can see those mills and they kill birds and people can hear them and you can't put them off shore because it ruins the views from the resorts and you can't use tidal gens because of environmental impact and geo thermal is out because of the drilling and release of caustic gases and GOOD LORD! you can't possibly have a nuke plant at all, ever, never, not is a million years we'll all die and biomass is out because trees are Mother Natures lungs and evil loggers will clear cut the jungle and the Iowa rainforest and release more CO2. So, having produced the longest run on sentence in this sites history, just how in the world are we supposed to produce that good, cheap, reliable power?

(quoted from post at 02:01:07 01/07/13) I guess coal mines are pretty.

Hey you coward hiding behind a guest name.
Does industry, transportation , agriculture and residential users worry if they have power when the wind doesn't blow?
Wind turbine run at 30-35% capacity factor.

Hope that that wind turbines are connected to an independent 115 or 230KV transmission line. As wind driven induction generators. They occilate, hunt and surge which causes voltage spikes, voltage spikes and harmonics.
What that means is that wind turbines need to be excited from and anchored to heavy power grid infrastructure. That has the protection and control trip points set very high.
The flashing aviation lights will be annoying for a few years until you get used to them.
I"m about 1-1/4 miles from the closest and it"s down wind. On occasion it can be heard but at distance it sounds like the ocean surf, but faster.
The worst part is mornings and everning with the blades flickering in the sunlight. There is about 3 weeks a year the sun rises while lined up with a turbine when I "m having breakfast. Cloudy or still mornings are fine but otherwise the sunlight into the house pulses or flickers for 10-20 minutes .
It would be worth the trip for you to drive on highway 21 between Kincardine and Tiverton approx 2 hours before sun set. The shadows from the blades make a "wind up and flash" strobing that every wind advocate should be chained in sight of for a week.
It"s even worse driving on the 8th, 10th and 12th of Bruce township when surrounded by turbines. The flickering is most disconcerting.
Base and peak load generation capacity still has to be online and spinning to carry electrical loads when the wind dies . Also require heavy generation capacity online just to absorb the power line harmonics transmitted from the wind turbines.
As far as wind turbines paying? It it wasn"t for guarentied rate here of 16 cents per KW for wind and the carbon credits. There is no way wind or solar can compete against nuclear at 3-4cents or coal at 4-5 cents.
Wind and solar power. The green feel good solution located out there away from their town and city homes. And doesn"t directly cost them anything out of pocket.

Thanks everyone. B&D, the power will be added to the transmission lines from Nanticoke G.S. Hydro one are in charge, building facilities right beside their existing transmission corridor. The first mill has begun to be installed with several bases ready. In our case, we only have a roadway to a neighbours mill which just replaces an existing laneway. I think,in retrospect, most of us who signed up 2 years ago for this project would have second thoughts.

Bret4207 +1.

What I love even more is when the same greenies who poo-poo every means of electrical generation we have, then complain about how much their electricity bill is!

You use more and more and more every year, and you won't let them add generating capacity, what do you think is going to happen?

Everything you said is true! However, I CANNOT even drive through them. The strobe effect just makes me all kinds of dizzy and then, even after they are behind me by several miles, I still have a sick headache.

Good post. It would be funny if it wasn't all true.

ust let the earth return to its natural state...........all it would take is a world wide Jim Jones, Jonestown, Guyana operation & then all the environmentalist ought to be happy. Man no longer altering the earth! Done.

A buddy of mine has a solution for those folks who don't want any kind of electrical generation... Send the bucket truck out with their names and a set of bolt cutters. Roll up, cut the tri-plex off the transformer... and drive on.
If they're that moralistic that they can't tolerate the method of electrical generation then we should do them the favor of protecting their morals by disconnecting them from the grid.

You think they are an eyesore now, this is what the country side will look like in 20 years or so..

In 20 years?? Just north of me about 25 miles, it is already WORSE than that, and I live in RURAL Iowa.
