rrlund, others - Mail carrier dies

Almost lost my brother who was driving a septic system vacuum tank truck, had the bad luck of being at an intersection when an old guy ran a stop sign and put the truck, upside down, into a deep ditch. My condolences to the mail carrier's family.

Yep,I just was on the Daily News site and saw that. He drove quite a ways to go to work if he was from Shepard. Sad situation. You have to hope the 21 year old's life isn't ruined by this too.

Sad to hear. Why do they always tell you if the person had a seat belt on or not. Seat belts are not the great life saving device everyone thinks they are.

I was in a wreck years ago. Where if I had had a seat belt on.I would not be here. Read about a wreck one time when I was in west Texas. Four people in the car. The only one that lived. Was the one with no seat belt.

He's probably looking at some time behind bars, loss of license, and some pretty steep fines, and then there's the civil suits... Ain't going to be over soon.

They do that to fudge the numbers so people will not know the truth because if the people did they would revolt and then the belt companys could not make any money and then the polititions could not get a kickback so they would not vote fore the things. I had a step cousin driving here soon to be husbands truck (he was a cousin on the other side) fresh paved black road at night with no gravel shoulder or paint markings in a rain storm, hit the edge and rolled the truck, was thrown out and seat belt still completely intact and supposedly working as it should. It broke her neck leaving the marks plainly what had killed her. Sister that was not belted in survived with just a broken pelvis. She could tell them what happened, did not have to guess. When the boyfriend-owner of the truck had to sign the report at the site of the wreck it was in about the belt causing here broken neck. When it came time to sign the final typewritten report it was all removed, questioned about it and told it was against the law to put anything negative in a report. Now if that isn't fudging the safty figures then what is?

Here in Ohio even with the seat belt law there is an exmption for postal workers and newspaper delivery personel while on the route. I know because I drove a rual paper route for over 15+ years. I was in some scarry situations. One time wating at cross road to turn left because of oncomming traffic a semi was not paying attention and did not try to slow till too late. He did not hit me but just barley and in hitting his bracks so hard he killed the engine and jacknifed the outfit. When I could complete my turn he got the truck restarted and took off. One of the other drivers sister worked for a neighboring paper and a young patrolman gave here a belt ticket. they went direct to the judje that got a hold of the post comander that in turn got hard on the young officer that was not going acording to the law.

Michigan (where this happend,) also has an exemption for rural mail carriers in their seatbelt law.

Well Billy, there may be some cases where not wearing a seat belt in a serious accident "might" be for the better, but I dare say not in most cases!
My son wrecked his '72 Gran Torino Sport when he was 18 at an estimated speed in excess of 125 MPH.
Over a guard rail, down a 50 ft embankment and upside down on a frozen (thank God) pond.
He broke off the Hurst shifter with his hip which caused him to limp some but other than that, nothing but minor cuts and scratches. He was drinking but, because of the influence of his driver ed teacher, he still had presence of mind enough to fasten his seat belt.
The good thing (he's 50 now) he never ever drank and drove since then!
Just so you know I'm not BSin, check out these pics. Only one wheel was not bent!

Brian I am not saying they are of no use. I am sure they do save lives. But just because you have one on. Doesn't mean you are going to walk away from every wreck. Glad your son made it out.Glad he can live to be a grumpy old man like the rest of us.

But some people think they are some kind of magic shield. I went to a friend of mines brothers funeral in 1973. He had built a car that was equal to a NASCAR stocker. Tried to out run the cops one day. Hit a bridge poll at around 150.From what the cop estimated he was doing. At the funeral I heard people say. Don't know why he was killed. He had his seatbelt on.

When I was 16 I had a serious accident. Blew every window out of the car, buckled the roof down, and the floor up. Tore the front wheels off the car, and the hood came back through the windshield. I was wearing my seat belt and walked away. I am a believer that seat belts save lives.

My own experience is that seatbelts probably saved the lives of two of my daughters. They were in a car when a tire went flat and the car veered off the road and hit a culvert - flipped and landed on the roof - would"ve broken both their necks if they hadn"t been belted in.

With all the real world statistics from labratory tests and real world crashes. The odds are overwhelmingly in your favour to properly wear a seatbelt.
I'll take that hard data over somebody's opinion on the Internet.

They should take all the seat belts out of airplanes and race cars...

In a few very specific situations a sealbelt has contributed to a death but it's a very low percentage.

Yes you can die with a seat belt on, but the odds are better than without. Everyone knows someone that died from having a seat belt on, just as everyone knows of someone who died because they didn't have it on. Had a cousin who died, she was nine months pregnant and on the way home from a doctors visit to see if it was coming soon, she wasn't wearing a belt because it was uncomfortable. She went off the gravel road and rolled and fell partially out and was crushed. Probably would have had minor injuries if any had she worn her belt.

And then there are the people who say they won't wear a seat belt because if they go off the road and into water they won't be able to get out and they will drown. Feb. 22 2006 I went off the interstate went air born and did enough damage to each of the six sides individually to total my truck but I was uninjured thanks to the seat belt and Ford Super Duty.

I was in a real bad smash as a front seat passenger when I was 18, seat belts were not law back then but the old driving instructor, who put all my mates and myself through our driving tests, insisted we always wore our belts, so it had become a habit to wear them. We were in a 2 door sports car and doing about 50 mph when we were hit head on by a large 4 door doing at least 70...Our engine came right through the bulkhead into the passenger compartment! and the drive shaft bent the rear axle. we both had seat belts on, Mine cut right through my clothes and took my skin off, but I was OK. My mate had less damage from the seatbelt, though the steering wheel did come up and cut an artery near his eyebrow. But although the other pair in the 4 door lived, I still cannot believe to this day what I witnessed that night, It was like slow motion, they both came straight out through the small windshield, I watched them soar over the glass sunroof of our car and land like ragdolls on the road over 60 feet behind us. Neither have ever been right since.
So I will take my chance with the seatbelt,,,thank-you
Sam

The neighbour Billy Bob, cousin of Bubba had this true story happen.
One night as Billy Bob was reading little Johnny a bed time story. Little Johnny suddenly sat up straight and said " goodbye Aunt Bessie". Billy Bob didn"t think too much of it at the time until the phone rang the next day that Aunt Bessie had indeed died.
A few weeks later Billy Bob was tucking little Johnny into bed .when little Johnny suddenly sat up straight and said " goodbye uncle Percy. Billy Bob was a bit worried the next day when the phone rang the next day with the news that Uncle Percy had died.
A month or two later Billy Bob was reading another good night story to Little Johnny . When little Johnny suddenly sat up straight and said " goodbye Daddy".
Well poor ol" Billy Bob was some scared now but didn"t say anything about it.. The next day he walked to work instead of driving, took the stairs instead of the elevator. Avoided the cafeteria food and avoided all sharp objects.
Billy Bob made it home all stressed out and frazzled , told his wife Bobby Sue that he had just had an awful day.
Bobby Sue says, well think you had a bad day today? This morning the mailman dropped dead on our front steps.

The way cars are designed nowadays you stand a better chance in them than being thrown out of them without a seatbelt on. Of course there are always exceptions to everything but I think the odds are more in your favor if you DO wear a seatbelt.

True story B&D! Everyone around here thinks the kids look like me until they see the mailman!
