No Cheap Horsepower

There is no such thing as cheap horsepower. If you
buy a 10,000$ tractor on a sale and you get it for
2,500$ there is a good reason the seller let it go
that cheap. New paint and decent tires are a heck of
a good mask. No real reason for posting this, just
thought I would throw my opinion out there due to
all the auction talk lately.

Some years back, I was at an equipment sale. There were two MF135s one with a slick paint job and dyed tires. The other was really weathered. Since I could tell they were owned by the same seller, I asked him which was in better shape. He advised me that the weathered one was, but he didn't have time to paint and clean it up.
I bought the weathered one $1,150.00 cheaper then the other!
Ran that 135 for app. 9 years and sold for more then I paid.

Exceptions to everything I guess. If it's a farm sale and just one tractor is selling cheap, what's the owner gonna do,pizz off the entire crowd by getting all bent out of shape and throwing a hissy fit over one item?

A guy just west of me buys the heck out of Duetz tractors. They're not popular around here, not many folks know much about them, but he farms with them, like I said, buys them for next to nothing and sells on the internet to others who know something about them.

Those tractors are there to SELL.not to "test the waters".Most of the time auction tractors are much cheaper than dealer/private sale.So the owner just lets it go and cries.....To not sell a tractor at a 'dispersal'auction(retirement, estate, etc)would be 'sale suicide'.

You can buy cheap HP tractors. Heck there are 100 HP plus tractors scattered all over the USA. Seems to be a bunch in Tx especially.
A lot of guys can't fix anything, even simple stuff! I have found them
abandoned because the paid hired hand said it blew up and so they replaced it with a newer one that carries a Tax depreciation deduction.
If you are going to buy off of the tractor jockies that constantly advertise here, you will get what you pay for.

Only Case IH and John Deere dealers in our area now days but there used to be Allis Chalmers and White, so now if an Allis or White or MM is in a sale they go cheap unless a Mid-West volume buyer happens to be there and then it has to be an 8 series Allis or a later model White for him to be interested, if they have cabs. The sugarcane stripper combines and new John Deere cotton picker that round bales the cotton have put a lot of tractors on the market that people kept just to pull carts and run module builders.

My cousin just bought a White 4-150 for $1800, All it needed was a muffler and 2 hydrolic cables and its good to go. Could use a coat of paint at some point in the future but it has good rubber and glass is there and has 3100 hours. The lights, AC everthing works as it should so not bad at all. More hp than he needs now but in the future who knows. This is a cheep hp tractor! Bandit

I think I was misunderstood. I meant that if you see a 4640 go for 15k less than they are usually going for then there is probably something wrong with it. If you want to buy an off brand and get it bought right then I think that's great. Just do some homework before you commit to that "great deal". This day and age a thousand bucks doesn't go far at the parts counter.

I have some customers that have tractors that they can't get by without. Instead of spending the money to by something decent, they come home from an auction with a Same tractor or a Deutz that you have to drive 2 hours just to get what little parts that are available. If you farm for a living and NEED the machine then it better be a good one. Pay me now or pay me later, either way with the cheap ones, you are gonna pay.

Around here the term cheap horsepower is usually used to describe an Allis 70x0, Case 1x70, some older whites. Tractors that may be pretty good, but can be bought cheaper than more popular tractors. I agree with you on cheap equipment. The cheapest for me has always been to go out and buy the best taken care of one that I can find. I am still a sucker for a fixer upper though, even though I never come out ahead.

I bought my 1570 Case several years ago for $2200 with a spun rod brg. I did the work myself and ended up with a good running 200hp tractor for around $4500. Bought a 2590 Case last fall with a C-3 clutch problem in the power shift for $3500. If there are not any other problems in the ps $2500 will go along way. So if I can get it going for a total investment of $6000 that would make both of them cheap power.

And if you only need a tractor that big to run, say,a chopper and a chisel plow, but it's too big for the planter, grain drill, sprayer, haybine, round baler, grinder mixer and manure spreader, what's the point praying at the alter of the Deere and spending $30,000 for the same power to do a few jobs? Once the silo is filled and the tractor is just sitting in the shed the rest of the year,as long as the cattle are eating,it doesn't matter what put the feed there.

And as far as the whole "I can get parts for Deere",well good for anybody who says so. Mother Deere left some huge holes in her new improved dealer network though and I'm dead center in the middle of one. If you want to be broke down for a week to ten days, break something green and yellow around here.

More time in the field and less in the shop means better profit=being able to afford tractors that don't need a half day's work before they can work.

Hi
It don"t matter if it"s Deere or Agco equipment round us the parts system is messed up right from the Manufacturers. we have plenty of independant not all one group dealers for both, and still a pain in the A#$ to get some stuff.

as long as you can get enough dsl. fuel for a deere, the 30/40 series had atrocious fuel consumption and no low end torque

Hi if you happened to be lucky and paid $2000 for
this 1155, pop down to the Massey forum and list it
for 4 to $6000. Guys will take your arm off in 2
mins for it, from the comments I made about the
issues these can have, and the replies I got back
saying I knew nothing, They would buy them all day
long for that money lol.
Regards Robert

I don't know. In the mid 90's my BIL wanted to go to a larger tractor but didn't want to spend any real money. He paid 5500 for a 1566IH with extra fuel tanks, front weights and decent rubber. PO had reciepts for a TA less than 100 hours before. It was his prime tillage tractor for 6 years. Only reasonhe got rid of it was because he wanted one of his boys to stay on the farm and the one willing wanted an 86 series IH. Then last 2 years they bought an AC 8070 MFW with a nice Koyker loader on it. The tight wad part bit again that's why he got it. Paid real close to 20K for it. It cost his an extra 10K for a major engine overhaul and now is back in for something with the tranny. Man that sure wasn't a good deal. On the other hand I got a 1206 IH for 4500. So far I've got about 1200 into a clutch job including a new rear engine seal, along with a new IPTO shaft and related bearings and seals and another 300 into a new MCV pump that will go in tomorrow. Have had it going on 4 years. Now what's cheap?
