old semi trailers

I have and old hawkeye 42' steel grain trailer that is in poor shape. It has a lot of rust and cracks and I was wondering if I should scrap it or sell it at auction. It has good tires and disc brakes and the traps and hoppers are good but really need the cracks and some rot taken care of. Ideas?
 
Take it to the auction but set a reserve on it at scrap price. Can't loose either way.
Or, remove the brakes, wheels and tires, and the traps and hoppers for future use and scrap the rest. Might be a bit difficult to get it to the scrap yard then though unless you cut it up.
 
First question would be: How much do you use it? If
the hoppers & everything else are in good condition,
then a Second Question comes to mind. Would it (in
this economy) be cheaper and / or more cost
effective to REPAIR it or REPLACE it?
 
if it is that bad you will never pass a DOT inspection and if you get stopped with it they will trough the book at you or if you have a accident with it you will never get out of the trouble you will be in. JUNK it
 
You have a point there. Maybe it'd be best to take the good rims and tires off and the tarp and put scab tires on it and haul it to the junker. I'd hate to see someone buy it and have a big troubles.
 
Take it to an auction and make it bring scrap price or better. Someone may want to fix it up or they may use in off road. Either way it should bring more than scrap price.

Also why worry what the next guy is going to do with it??? It is his after he pays for it.
 
I had an old grain bed semi trailer that I took the axles out from under set on the ground cut in half that widen it and made hay barn out of it. Works very well and the cost of my new barn less then $300 but I do believe in function and do not worry about form
 
do as you wish, i wouldn't want to see it on the road,, if it's that bad to be road worthy,,, would you want that trailer [or one like it] behind you while you are in personal car/truck with family and see it come crashing towards you... most ideas are to scrap it...your call...friendly thought
 
I've seen two old steel trailers break open. Both broke in front of the front hopper. It really makes a mess to clean up. A grain hopper trailer is a unit frame trailer, meaning the whole structure of the trailer is the frame. Any little weakness anywhere is not good. I'd do like the others say and sell it for scrap. I'm gonna scrap it or that reason Jim. I don't want to see that thing fall apart on anyone and cause trouble.
