Progress on the VW

Well, got the first cv shaft replaced on the passat, peice of cake once I got the right tool to remove them. Also got new brake pads, so I was working on them too. Since I'm doing the repairs at my work, I took the rotors over to the blanchard grinder and resurfaced them.

I got the drivers side done, and when I got to the passenger side, the wheel bearings are loose. The 4 link suspension in there is kicking my butt, as it's all rusted up. Tomorrow I think I'll hit it with a torch and grinder. Too bad I'll need to bring it in for an alignment now when I'm done...

The rotor looks great. Somewhat tough to make sure they are parallel with the hub mount flange, but it looks well done, and if it had little if any runout before, it will be fine. I hate rusty suspension parts as well. Getting the pivot pins out of a 260Z Datsun was one example! Jim

I ground the 1st picture as shown first, so it was flat on the surface the wheel mounts to. As long as that's parallel with the otherside, it should be fine. After I ground the back side, then I flipped it over and ground the outside surface.

On the second one I forgot to turn the magnet back on though, and I flung it into the coolant tank when the grinding stones came into contact with it. Took one very small notch out, so i don't think it'll be anything to worry about. Just wish I would have hung onto the set I took off my wife's lesabre. I could have just resurfaced those in my free time and kept them as spares for the next time I do hers...

If you need a new link and bushing kit for the suspension/steering, Blaufernugen in Manitowoc has all of them, at decent prices. They also have a shop on site, and are really good about answering any questions.

I buy 90% of my Vw/Audi parts from them.

Your Passat is basically a stripped down Audi A4. Most hard parts interchange. Most electrical parts, too.

Blauparts.com is their website.

Best of luck!
