I've got pretty good guess as to what's getting handled first! Anyone had decent luck with Gurneys products? Ordered 2 years and seeds didn't seem any better then NK from wally world or Fleet Farm. After apying more for freight than the seed was worth, I started buying from a local hardwaare that still has bulk seeds. Not as wide a selection, but good reliable varieties. Cost is about 1/3, and I've had very good success with their seed. I still enjoy looking at the catalogs, but I buy locally. [Reply]  [No Email]

Anyway, I have never ordered from them. I have had very good luck with J. W. Jung seed company out of Wisconsin. I have had nearly 100% germination with every seed that I have planted from them. The only thing I had issues with was some potatoe sets 2 years ago(moldy) that did not all grow, they gave me full purchase price back. SHON [Reply]  [No Email]

As far as seed quality goes, I bought some bulk buttercrunch and black seeded Simpson lettuce seed from the local True Value Hardware store last spring. Planted some of both kinds several times both in the spring and fall. None germinated. Was throwing out old seed later so just broadcast them on the garden. The lettuce seeds all geminated what looks like two three times, way too thick but we are still having lettuce from them. Go figure. Joe [Reply]  [No Email]

I can't think of a place with a more dis-similar climate from mine than Yankton South Dakota, so I've never ordered from Gurneys (although they sent me catalogs for years). We've got a fairly unique climate west of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon (I've never heard of anyone getting a Beefsteak tomato to ripen here), but have several seed and nursery companies that produce material that is suited to our climate. As far as tomatoes, for instance, we have only 2 possibilities here: Early Girl, and all those others that don't work. [Reply]  [No Email]

Only one tree didn't make it but their seeds were worthless. I had to go out and buy more of everything locally to get a garden growing. They replaced the tree for free. They are supposed to send a new one this spring. I was kind of mad at them as when I called them about the tree they said it would ship next year as it was too late this year. The shipping dates for this coming year are AFTER the dates that I called last year. Couldn't figure that one out. The trees were very good though. [Reply]  [No Email]

Like many seed companies, they were bought out by corporations mainly concerned about making money instead of putting out a good quality product. You might buy seeds from them, but I would avoid any root stock from them now. I have also heard that customer service is based out of India or Pakistan, but that might just be internet talk, not sure. [Reply]  [No Email]

Ordered it sometime in april. It was too late to get stuff from elsewhere. Won't consider ordering from them again after that fiasco. Dad had the same issue the year before with them.
