OT- HELP!! VW internal splined bolts- cv joints

I started in on the cv drive shafts on my passat, only to find I need a socket for the internally splined (look to be 12 pt, but it's hard to count them... I know their not just a torx head) bolts that hold the axle to the transmission side-

Any one know what I'm looking for?

I got a little bit of time left before every place is closed for the night.

Ask your parts dealer they usually know which kind that you
need. There are about 25 different types of these things

They are either 8mm or 10mm triple square bits. The
correct term is triple square, they are not spline
or allen.

Some parts stores will loan to you, specialty wrenches. Call them and see if it might be one that they have available.

That's the info I was looking for- I found a set at Autozone for $30. Just gotta wait until my wife gets here (I'm at work....) and then I'll buzz over and go get a set.

I knew I could get the right answers on here- the VW forums are always less than helpful it seems, just a lot of ego's involved.

I bought the adapter you need to redo the axle shafts on my 2004 passat. It was about 15 dollars at Carquest.
You can email me your address and I will mail it to you tomorrow if you want?

I have one I bought at O'Reilly's. Believe it of not, they used the same ones for lots of years. The last one I used mine on was my 1969 Karmann Ghia.

If same as rabbit it is a 12 point internal star bit. Lisle has them, harder to find as a single tool. Last time I got a set of 3, different sizes. It a metric deal. Also, Parts Place in Auburn Hills, MI has them. They deal with vw parts. Catalog right here says 8mm 12 point tool. #sn3481 for $8.95. Tele is 248-373-2300. And I have no connection to them other than a customer. Be sure to clean the crud out of the recess before inserting the tool. If you get a catalog check the blurb on p 38 in the 2012 cat.

I picked up a set at Autozone, now I'll work on it again tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it done before the weekend. I'm gonna resurface the rotors on the blanchard grinder while I'm at it because I'm changin the brake pads too- the message came on the dash in the last few weeks.
