prices for used parts

Crazy "sold-for" prices this last week on fleabay:
Heisler overdrive: $861
FA Regular/10-20 small round starter tank: $325

Both items looked in nice shape...but still could not believe either price! Makes me think instead of spending my time photographing junk - I should be removing parts to buy and resell.

Know what you mean. Found a used grille for my 664 the other day. Little bit of rust but otherwise in good shape. They wanted $185.00 for it. Makes me wonder just how bad I really want a "original" grille.

All it takes is 2 people that have to have it. I never get involved in bidding wars. I Bid My maximum and check on it later. Hope Yall had a good Christmas.

I hear ya. Tried buying some MM parts last week but just couldn't justify what someone else was willing to pay. I guess the economy hasn't hit everyone yet.

Scrap prices have nothing to do with it. People have been asking ridiculous prices for parts, and parts have been selling high on ebay since day one.

Lots of people think that just because something is old, that it is valuable. Then again some parts are rare and valuable, and maybe you're just mad that they won't give it to you for nothing.

Either pay the price or don't. You want a "free market economy." Free market means people can ask whatever price they want, and sell it or not. They don't have to sell it to you and you don't have to buy it from them.

There are bargains on ebay if you poke around.

Within the last year, I bought an excellent used governor for my H Farmall for $35, plus a few bucks shipping, and a complete transaxle for a John Deere 111 garden tractor for $26.

mkirsh,
Agreed, free market is great. The sellers were not even asking a high price for these parts... the bidders just took them that high. I just thought it was amazing.

Goose,

The bidding definitely goes both ways - we have run the gammit...

Paid $94 for our starter tank a year ago - but we were in it to win it, as we had never seen one up for bid before (and any that we had seen in junkyards were totally shot). We thought we paid a pretty hefty price for it - that is why seeing the one sell for $325 really surpised me.

But we got rear steel for our Regular at $200 (with local pickup, so no shipping costs) and felt that was a real fair price. And we just bought an extra E4A magneto for $13 dollars, which was really low priced.

Mike (WA),
LOL.
Maybe someday I'll try...as long as you promise no fruitcake will be involved in the deal. :)

Ron,
We usually do that too... just bid our max and then check on it when the auction is all over.

As I said to Goose, we did pay $94 for our Regular starter tank last year - but we were in it to win it, so we did not mind paying a premium price.

We had a nice Christmas - hope you and your family did too.

Parts that look small and unimportant to most people may be the most sought after and hard to find original part there is on a certain antique tractor and no
full original restoration would be complete without that part and if they are scarce they'll bring a big price.Simple economics very little and dwindling supply and much demand equals Big $$$$.
I'd say ebay is one of the best places to get realistic prices of what something is worth because they cover such a huge area,so localized prices both high and low are averaged out on ebay. If you see an item go for $200 and there were 5 bidders that were still in after $150 than you can be assured the real world value of that item is at least $175 if you have one to sell.Thats like JD Patio garden tractors certain orginal color seats in nice condition are worth well over $1000 when the rest of th tractor can be had for $1000 but the restoration isn't complete without the original seat and they are very scarce.

Just because the price goes higher than you think it should doesn't mean anything other than you had no idea what the real market value of the item was,the real market price is set by the two higheast bidders.

We (Mrs.(WA) and I) did some serious thinking about the Berry situation, and your understandable concern at the thought of us callously spraying them. We all need to be more cognizant of our environment, and the need to "go green" in the way we handle things.

So you'll be happy to learn that we have ceased all toxic spraying of the blackberries. Instead, we got 3 goats, AND THEY ATE 'EM!

Now, doesn't that seem like a much more environmentally sensitive solution?

You see that every once in awhile, I attribute it to someone with deep pockets doing a restoration and price is no object. Usually see a few more similar ones sell after that for a lot less.

Traditional Farmer,

I agree ebay is a good source for price range... just average out various prices and there you have you average.

And we were not even bidding on the parts I mentioned in my orginal post...I just like to watch things sell as a matter of interest. Kind of like going to an auction - but did it from my living room instead of standing out in the cold.

We actually like ebay because you have about one week's time to ask them questions, request more photos, plus do a little research online... then set your max bid (unlike attending an auction in person where you are often deciding something on the spot).

I buy lots of stuff from ebay, but I do an advanced search and use Buy it know. Like it better than bidding. I find things I can't find locally and usually get it free shipping and tax free.

This past summer, I took pics of my junk I haven't used in the past 20 years and listed it on craigslist. Made over $1600. Can't tell that I got rid of much, garage seems fill up faster than I got rid of things.

I'm perhaps one of the few who is a fan of both ebay and craigslist.

Found a JD gator on craigslist at a bargin $. Not a scam. Talked to the guy. Going to pick it up Friday.

From now until spring planting , things will go high. Lots more people on the puter. Restorations going on. I make some great deals in the spring-fall because you just don't have the bidders , they are all out farming or doing summer things. I will spend 1 hr right before bed any time of year. Paid off pretty good so far.
