Pto dyno question

Merry Christmas all. I am looking to invest in a dyno for the shop. I have been using the one at my local Deere dealer and at 150$ a crack it may be time to get my own. The most power it will see is probably no more than 200HP. It will be primarily used for break-in purposes. I have contacted A and W and the price nearly made me fall out of my chair. The problem is I don"t need a 600HP dyno. Do any of you know of a dyno company that may build a smaller less expensive model? Thank you.

Dealerships closing or upgrading is your best bet for the incidental user. Used ones bring next to nothing. Watch the auctions. IF IN FACT YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT FOR EXTENDED PERIODS AND RUN IN YOU WANT THE WATER COOLED UNIT. Should be able to pick up a use one for less than a fourth of new.

I would look for an older M&W unit. They are just a hydraulic pump with an adjustable pressure restriction on the flow. They have a coil of copper in the oil for the water to cool the oil. They are simple and work well. I have a smaller one that is rated at 85 Hp continuous and 150 intermediate. Then The larger one is 150 continuous and 250 intermediate. I found the larger unit at a dealer close out about ten years ago. I gave $4500 then for it.

Does anyone still make a Baker Fan type unit?
Seems like that would make an ideal dynometer if what you're looking for is a load... Especially if the HP numbers aren't terribly important.

Here is Pete's contact info.

"I work on dyno's, have parts, and also sell them. I have books for just about all M&W dyno's, plus answer just about any question that you might have. You can give me a call or drop me a PM. Thanks, Pete 712-490-2920"

There is a dealer close to me still using a pair of M&W's. The talk is an upgrade soon and I have dibbs on the small one at that time. The dealer I worked for had the M&W when I started then upgraded to an A&W. They kept the old one for the smaller tractors and two cylinders. I asked my old boss about it but he said they use it too much to let it go. I'll start watching auctions when it gets a little warmer come spring. One thing is for sure, I'm not spending 17K on something that gets used maybe 4 times a month.

Where are you located? I have an M&W that the neighbors use more often than I do. I guess I would sell it. I'm in middle TN.

I agree with jm, watch for a smaller. older dealer or shop going out. I picked up my Taylor from a guy with a little old shop. He hadn't used it in a long time because it didn't work, so he it me have it for $200.00. It just needed disassembling and cleaning, and new packings.

If T.E.C. isn't interested I may be.
