98 years ago tonight the fighting on the Western Front ceased and the men came out of their trenches. Each side exchanged fig pies and they shook hands to celebrate Christmas. But.....The Generals said..."THIS UNWAR LIKE BEHAVIOR MUST CEASE IMMEDIATELY" And so it went on and became the most horrific war ever fought-----Trench warfare.

Merry Christmas to all and praise the Lord.

My favorite uncle was in that war. He was a farm boy, so his job was driving a team of mules with a wagon. He hauled guns and ammunition to the front and bodies on the return trip.

Someone in the outfit snitched on him that he was an expert rifleman after he'd deliberately scored low at target practice, so he ended up doing firing squad duty also. That was a common practice in those days.

One of my great grandfathers was sent over to Europe on a troop transport ship. But....He ate soup from a can that was sealed with lead and he got lead poisoning, he was sent back to the USA on a Hospital ship. (lucky him)
My Greatgrandfather died in 1974, on Christmas day. I was just a kid.

I never heard about the figgy pudding part but I read not too long ago that it lasted for more than two days and that there was a lot of ball playing going on. And yes upper management did see it as a threat to hostilities and put an end time on it.

Uncle never did say who he shot - but he said that he could tell if his gun had the bullet because the recoil was more solid than from a blank cartridge.

He said that they advanced into a village in France one afternoon; the village people were not friendly so the troops had to billet in the local stockyard. The next morning a General showed up to inspect the troops.

He started yelling at the troops for having dirty uniforms. One guy yelled at him: "You'd be dirty too if you slept all night in a cow yard you SOB!" The General had him in front of the firing squad within an hour; my uncle was fortunate that his name didn't get drawn that day.

Yes, they had firing squads in WWI - and used them, often without a court marshal.
