High Mileage F150 Question

I am looking for a used pickup for occasional use maybe 2500-3000 miles per year and as such I have been buying old beaters but after my last one was retired because the frame rusted out I have been thinking about something not quite so old.

I have located a one owner 03' Ford F150 extended cab 2WD with the 5.4 engine that is in excellent shape with a full maintenance history since new and priced right it was a salesmans vehicle so the downside is that it has 358,000 miles has anyone had any experience running that kind of miles on that engine?

Most people will agree, "road miles" do not cause as much wear on an engine as day to day driving such as 20-30 miles to work and back. If it has been maintained on a regular schedule it may have many good miles left in it. Of course there is the rest of the running gear to consider also. Has anything ever been replaced or rebuilt? In an instance such as this, the main factor to me would be the price, because it can be in seeming perfect condition, but with that many miles anything can happen at any time. Know what I mean? My daughter and her husband just bought an '03 F150 XLT just like the one you describe, folding Tonneau cover on the bed, 133,000 miles, for about $6000.00. So the price would be the kicker. If you can get it for a good price, then you could maybe afford to repair it if something broke.

We run an all Ford fleet of ford f 150 s . Have 12 at this time here on the farm and at the dealership including my everday driver as well as the grand son. we try and trade about two each year so they stay around 5 or 6 years. Have had several go over the two hundred thousand mark with out engine replacement but I would figure that engine is end of life if it has not been replaced. Would need to be fairly cheap to make it work. We use gas engines not the diesel .

I am a salesman, when I sell my personal vehicle with massive miles, as I recently did, I showed them my new vehicle. 2012 Passat, 26,000 miles already. I gave them the records and they bought it. With 287k on the clock. I even told them it would work perfectly until you take it home. That car will go for many thousands more. It was treated well.

I've had a 1997 F150 with the 5.4 go over 350,000 miles without ANY problems. The guy who bought it has over 400,000 on it now. A good portion of my miles were pulling a trailer. I have had two other vehicles with the 5.4 approach 300,000 before we sold them. If the price is good, go for it. The 5.4 Triton is hard to beat.
