david brown 770 tractor(white)

just bought this and am unfamiliar with it.supposed to be a 770 selectomatic but it only has 3 forward and reverse, high and low range.all i find on this is a 12 speed selectomatic.anybody have a clue as to what this is.3 cyl.diesel

770s are all 12 speed, and all Selectamatics.

I have 2 here. What is your serial number that might tell us what is going on, or maybe you aren't familiar with how to shift it.

To get the underdrive engaged(the extra 6 gears you are missing), you push the left stick to the left and forward while in either "H" or "L".

Selectamatic has nothing to do with the transmission, it is what DB named its advanced for it's timed 3 point hitch/draft control system.

Can talk you through it on the phone if need be.

(quoted from post at 11:57:21 12/13/12) David Brown tractors are NOT made by case...there are a few cases made by DB.

The are MANY Cases built by DB, their best sellers for many years were DBs.

would not shift to the left, only shift to hi or low.here are some pictures of the shifters and the shift platform.it has another covered opening looks like for another shifter.it is a round cover and to the right is stamped slow on top and normel below.there is also a plate in front of the shifters with diagrams of shift patterns. i'm lost.probably need to sell it and go back to the massey 135.lol.

I had a DB Case 885 which is very similar, just a little newer and a little larger. It had 4 speed Synchro shift along with a hi-lo. It was a good tractor with no problems after I took care of those that it came with. After maybe three years I sold it and got a Case 1490, also built by David Brown. Case had bought out David Brown and all Case tractors up to around 85 HP were actually DBs until 1984 when Case bought IH. You should do well with it. If the PTO clutch is a hand operated lever keep dust out of the lever (upper) end of it.

If it has the third stick opening it isn't a 770. The 770 gear case is narrower than that of all other DBs. All 770 boxes were 2 stick. Totally different transmission than any other DB. The 3 opening/3 stick gear cases were use on the 780, 880, which were also small 3 cylinder DBs. Might also be a tractor that Johnny cash wrote a song about... something someone put together out of a pile of parts.

Get me the serial number and I can tell you what you have. You will find the SN stamped on top of the frame, right side, just forward of the engine.

It will look something like this:

(quoted from post at 22:04:04 12/14/12) serial # is 780 1 609492.thanks for your knowledge!!!i can't get these pictures to download.

You have a December 1970 built 780.

780 is a better tractor in most every way from a 770. More power, common parts to other models, 2 speed pto, remote hydraulics... The list goes on and on. Downside is you only have the 6 speed gearbox. My 780 is only a 6 speed also, it does fine.

A 780 is basically the larger 880/885 engine(3 cylinder, 55ci per hole) mated to a 770 front axle, and using the heavier common DB gearbox.
