pick from the dumpster

Did a repair today, the people had a dumpster in the driveway,I picked this fertilizer spreader. The axel had some rust on it,so the one wheel dragged, fixed it when I got home, couldnt let it go to the dump. I guess Im an American picker too!

Don't understand why people don't put it out by the street with a "Free" sign on it, rather than throwing it in the dumpster. I've gotten rid of a lot of stuff that way- its pretty painless.

When daughter was in college, lots of stuff would go out by the street at end of term, when kids were moving out. She was looking at a decent couch, and wondering how to get it home, when a kid with a pickup stopped. He said he wanted it too, and said, "lets flip for it- if you win, I'll haul it to your place; If I win, you help me load it and I take it." She agreed, he flipped, and she lost. So she smiled and said, "Well, that's the way it goes, let's load it up!" They did, and the kid said, "I was just kidding about that deal, you were here first, its yours- I just wanted to see if you were a whiner." And he took it to her place. And asked her for a date. And she turned him down, because she had a boyfriend. And to his credit, he didn't whine, either. And after she broke up with boyfriend, she opined that perhaps she should have accepted the date, after all.

nice spreader, got to point that so much ends up at landfill, our county landfill now picks out useable/saleable items and has a resale store; guess that says a lot about society in general. If I dont need it anymore I will give or sell to someone, if I used it very long its so bad no body needs or wants it :)

That's a story both of them will fondly look back on for a while.
As for why people don't put usable items out for those who can use them, who knows but It's probably because of one of many conviluted notions that some have.
An investor bought a place adjoining land I owned. I had mowed both places to keep them within city ordainance and ocasionaly baled them if the grass was good. I called the new owner to offer him the same no cost to him aggrement as I had with previouse owner. He would not have been less receptive if I had offered keeping his wife company when he was out of town. He would allow it to go until the city sent a warning then hire my neighbor to mow it. Mom called those kind of decisions "cutting your nose off to spite your face".

Hey Mike. A few years ago my Wife put three bicycles out by the road with a free sign on them. Later she said two are gone one more to go. About dark I went down there and all three bikes were there. Someone must have not liked the two they took , so brought them back.

A nice pick Larry! I can't believe what people chuck. I got a working solo back pack sprayer, good gas cans from a dumpster. One multi millionaire I work for was gonna throw away 2 of these Propane heaters you stand under by the swimming pool, he offered them to use, said they were $1000 apiece, if we dont want them they go in the dumpster, my brother and dad took them. Same guy also was gonna chuck about 10 16foot 2x6s and 4 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood. Said if I don't take it's going in dumpster, good score for me as I was about to build a run in shed for the cows! What really bugs me is all the crap people buy made in china, it breaks so they throw it away, who knows what toxins are being dumped in our landfills by china. Were like a landfill for china now!

Go see the guy that he is gonna hire to mow and tell you will do it for half of what he is getting!

Uffff   Thats not good :? :? :?
Dont you guys know our economy is built and runs on waist..
Buy new..buy new:wink:

Nice looking spreader!
You could probably put a tongue on it to haul behind a riding mower too.
A friend of mine put a working push mower out in her yard with a "Free - Works" sign on it.
No one wanted it. Can't be any good if its free.
So she put a "For Sale" sigh on it.
Someone "stole" it that night. LOL

I make use of the "free" method. Don't really understand why it works but it does. Last one was a gas grill that had seen better days. Couple came by on a $20,000 motorcycle and asked me to hold it for a day until they could get back with their truck. If you can afford a $20,000 motorcycle, why do you take a free grill that was $150 new 10 years ago? Guess I don't understand.

I read once about a guy (not Fred Sanford) who made a living cruising rich neighborhoods and hauling off the stuff the swells put out on the curb.

My sister worked thirds with her husband for many years. Where they worked was right next to a pretty high scale neighborhood. They got to know which days where the garbage days and would work straight through their lunch break to get off a half an hour early.

It was amazing the things they would find thrown out. She has a Lazy Boy leather set of recliners. They where thrown out because the couch that matched them had a tear in the one cushion. They hauled all of it home and used the couch with a cover for years. Now that their kids are gone and they bought a smaller house she just kept the recliners. She looked at the time and that set was real high priced.

Along that line, a few years ago just south of me was a old house. The original house was logs and had siding over the outside and drywall on the inside. Also had a fireplace and chimney, that was nice. The owner hired a friend of mine to tear it down and burn it. Well he seen what was inside, and sold it to another guy (the log cabin and fireplace) Well they were taking it apart and numbering the logs and the stones and the owner came out to see how they were doing. He didn't want the house saved. He called the Sheriff, the Sheriff said he had contracted to have it torn down, and if the contractor wanted to sell it to someone else he could. The owner had been offered 5000 for the fireplace a year or so earlier and wouldn't sell it. Really a sad story because both of them are gone now. Must be something I don't know about this deal.

I was borned and raised in Dallas. I used to pick up stuff like that all the time. The guys that I worked with gave me a hard time about it as I was a union carpenter then. I made a lot of money on the side repairing and reselling items that I picked up from the curb.
About 30 years ago I moved to the country, where I had always wanted to live. The hardest thing for me to get used to out here was when people throw things away here they are of no use to anyone. I still love it here though. 60 miles outside Dallas/Ft. Worth

Growing up, a kid in my class had a father that worked as a trash hauler for one of the richer 'burbs near Columbus, OH. They were allowed to "pick" the trash and keep what they wanted. They had all kinds of nice things the more well off didn't want any more.

We use cheap fans all summer to keep the llamas cool and they quit after a few years, not worth trying to fix (China made and all that). I put the used up ones out at the road and they disappear pretty quickly.

I'm seeing this in our area with tractors and other old stuff. The owner will let it set and rot rather than let someone else buy it. Went to an estate auction where this was the case, the old boy was too stubborn to sell anything so the heirs did. A lot of it was just rusted junk or parts. Must be some kind of mental sickness, hoarding or something. Sad.

i have one i pull behind a four wheeler, and it works pretty good. one thing to watch for, make sure if your spreading fertilizer, you wash between the throwing disc and its drive axle. fertilizer can build up there, and makes the shaft rust to the point that it splits the plastic.
