4260 sq ft house and green houses all need to come down.Nothing wrong with the house just not what they want. last is a lot we cleared years ago that turned out to be a grave yard.

When living in the Dallas area I remember seeing many homes demolished in the Highland Park / University Park (home of SMU) area (where that idiot Jerry Jones lives) because they were not what the new owner wanted. The lots were small too, but the wealthy just had to live in that area. On a positive note, in most cases during the tear down a large part of the materials were salvaged and re-used in the east Dallas area which was a new historical district where people were actually bringing back the old houses. Many of those homes had turned into apartments or rooming houses and the area quickly declined. Folks started buying them up from the sleazy investors and renovating them and most were being returned to single family dwellings.

I just don't get that. Why tear down a good home and spend $$$ to build a new one? What a waste.

Just don't understand that, but then I'm not a "house" person. As long as its functional, I'm not too picky.

From what I've seen in that area most of the time they take the existing house and go up with it adding a story or two. I believe the term is mini mansion.

Ron,

Nice pics. Sure is a huge one. Six of ours would probably fit into it.

So do you salvage things if they are nice? Say wood work, doors, windows, cupboards, etc. The roof support arms on the main entry are neat.

That technique is very popular with the "Microsofties" wanting to build on Lake Washington, which is very expensive real estate and is near their Redmond company headquarters. Bill Gates bought 4 contiguous properties at the most desirable spot- paid handsomely for them- then tore down all 4 houses and built his mansion. Houses were all top-end when built in the '50's.

Time marches on, as they say.

Number 2 on what Ken said about the loss of the greenhouses.

I know I'm socially deprived but who is "that idiot" Jerry Jones?

John that is the James Island side of the Wappoo Cut bridge. There was once a small fire station there. In preparation for a new one we cleared the lot behind it. Turned out to be a bunch of unmarked graves there.

Miss Feet,
I have containers full of "Good Stuff". Mostly in preparation to build a house at the farm. I try to save all the good treated lumber as it is easier to store and I use it to build floating docks. I save heart pine when we find it. Mostly we crush it and send it to the dump. Most times there isn't much to salvage, lately mostly burnt houses.

It is a little unusual as it is not a beach or water front lot. It is a barrier island and one claim to fame is this area is where Edger Alan Poe lived and wrote The Goldbug (seriously).

I just want the overhead doors, but by the time I drove out there, I could buy new ones for less money:)
