loader tractor recommendation

Well i think my ford 4000 maybe shot. in the spring i found the oil was think and grey and i had no coolant. took it apart changed head gasket found no cracks any were, removed oil pan found no signs of crack in block, but it still dumps coolant. i need a a 45-60pto hp utility tractor i really liked my ford i also have an oliver 1850 i really love but dealer support is 3hr away. I need a tractor to run a 6-7 ft brush mower 6-7 box scraper, post hole digger, and move round bales, also i need a loader to turn manure piles and move big round bales. i currently borrow a friends skidsteer for my loader work. but he sold it a week or so ago. so I"m not totally comitted to any color of tractor but do like my oliver and don"t like paying extra for certain colors. i think i might be able to come up with 4-6000 to replace my ford. any recommendations ?

Ford engine blocks go porous, a simple rebore and liner pressed in and bored back to standard is usually all that is needed. Even if you go to sell it, clean oil will help the price!. Take off the sump/oil pan and fill the block/rad with water and place a piece of card under the block to find which bore is leaking, you may need to turn the starter over to move the pistons so they are not blocking the water from running down. Very often just boring one cylinder is sufficient.

I like the Oliver for the 2 speed reverse, but in all honesty, every brand has tractors that make good loader tractors. I am kinda partial to Case, but I am looking at a 450 Farmall diesel for my next loader tractor.

The ford has been good so far. It is a 1965 3 cyl gas made in basildon England. If I do get it fixed do you think it is strong enough to move round bales. My baler is nh 851 makes a 5.5 x 5.5 bale. I'm new to rd bales.

pick a size and go a couple of sizes bigger. I started with an MTA with a trip bucket, went to a 656 with a hydralic bucket and now have a 970 case with a wl 42 westendorf on it. All within a few thousand of each other.

where in IN can you be 3hrs from an agco dealer? why do you need dealer support for your biggest, best 40 yr old tractor anyway? implement dealer is the last place i would look for parts for an oliver. napa, carquest, and mostly on-line for parts. unless this is about that 4-6000 burnin a hole in your pocket...

Hoosierhog, I am handeling 1000# to 1200# round bales with a 45 hp Allis Wd45. but would be better if I had power steering. My next loader tractor WILL have front wheel drive of some kind. I am sick of spinning on slick manure.

Gasoline engines generally do not have cavitation issues.

Are you certain that there are no cracks?

I would fix the Ford first. We had a 6140 AC 4X4 with a loader. It would lift any bale. But was slow going from forward to reverse. no shuttle. They are in your price range. But I wouldn't recommend one. We have a 4320 JD compact 48 hp. now. It has a electronic hydro. goes back and forth with two petals on the floor. Loader is fast and has quick tach bucket and bale spear. Also good cab. Will put 14 bales on our trailer in a flash. Think about a Case 480/580 C to E Backhoe Loader. They are in your price range and they have a torque convertor and shuttle. You will never regret owning one. Opinions are like bellybuttons everybody has one. :) Vic

Ford Basildon blocks are notorious for cavitations/porous castings. you can barely find one over here with it's original block. All the old Ford dealers had a special hand truck just for wheeling the new short motors out to their customers from the stores.

The only agco dealer I know of is plevna implement in Kokomo in. I'm in the crawforsville area. And all equipment needs service amd parts eventually, my Oliver is a 1850 with the 354 Perkins diesel with 3500 original hrs it can do any thing it has amazed me many times. The only prob I haved had that I really needed agco was trying to find parts to change from 1000 pto to a dual pto, napa does not carry those parts.

Agreed, regarding diesels but I've never seen a Ford gasoline engine with cavitation issues.

No I'm sure there is some where but I can't see it. I think it's a very fine crack that spreads as the motor warms. I'd love to keep it and put a loader on it but I'm tired of throwing money at it.

A 4000 is certainly adequate for handling round bales. Faster hydraulics and front wheel assist would be nice, but don't preclude its use. My 4600 (same as your 4000, but 2 series newer) is my loader tractor, and handles 100's of round bales each year... mostly 5'x6' or 4'x4 1/2' high moisture bales. I would bet on your problem being a hole in a cylinder wall too... and I would rebuild it before buying a different one. (but I'd do all three cylinders)

Well I've seen a few IH 575 with loaders and a friend has a 3020 with a loader but he is pretty proud of it wants 8000, I'm thinking that I mat look for a MF 165 or 175 I have seen them from time to time

exactly my point... you've needed the dealer ONE time so far. if your in montgomery co you're not 3 hrs from plevna's unless your driving the 1850 there. i don't know if all agco dealers can/will help you with oliver parts, but you need to type "agco dealers" in your search engine. you're surrounded. like i said before though, an agco dealer would be my last resort. if you're gonna let that oliver sit there and not use it cause you think you need dealer support, then how much you want for it?

Another often overlooked AGCO dealer is any Cat dealer who also carries the Cat AG line. My BIL was having trouble with the local joke of a dealer for AGCO when he needed a new crank shaft. He ask if I would online. I found on the AGCO site that the crank was available new and that he could get it from Cat. The AGCO dealer screwed around for 3 weeks telling him NLA. The Cat dealer had it in 3 days.

I think you miss understand me. My olie is the second most usded tractor I own it does all my tillage all my round bailing. I pave pulled 5-16 plow and a 4-18 but I use 4-16 I pull a white 252 18ft disc and a 9 shank chisel with 2 shanks dropped and the remaining shanks space around 15 inches it pulls an 20ft bradly field cultivator. I love that tractor. I just thought if I was buying another I'd pick something that had better parts availability. And I suppose your right Kokomo is not 3hrs but still alot farther the newholland dealer here in town or the case IH dealer. I see you are west central IN where are you from?

more so on the 10 series, some on the 600 series, rarely on the 1000 series..
as injection designed improved, cavitation became a big problem, so adding cooling conditioner is good.

yes, that changes everything. i wouldn't want a loader on the oliver either. using your criteria, it seems ih/case or ford/nh will be what you end up with. you mentioned mf earlier but i don't think banes or booth can help you on that can they? you ever been to edwards in alamo? i'm nw of you close to IL.

forgot to mention that i think you should just fix your ford now if you can. such good little tractors and you have the money to do it right.

Well more I think about it I know every one is right I just need to rebiuld the ford. Besides gives me something to do in the winter. Booth used to carry agco parts back when they were a sunflower dealer but dropped the line cause they didn't move enough parts to bother with and I've never tried bane for agco parts.
