Question about Cockshutt 1955

I have a 1955 Cockshutt with a 310 Waukesha turbo engine. This fall, the rod went through the block. I have read that the Waukesha is a poor engine. I would hate to wreck this tractor so I want to put a 354 turbo Perkins into it. Has anyone ever done this and what changes (if any) would I have to make? I"m assuming the Perkins would work since 1850"s had the same engine just without the turbo. The frame looks the same to me between the two. Opinions anyone? Thank you.
 
You would have to use the front tub off an 1850. I would disagree that the Waukesha is a poor engine, especially in the 1955. If it were mine, I'd either repair the block and overhaul, or find another block. Just make sure you do the updates to the engine.
 
I've heard a lot of rods getting the own out of those motors. A guy at a local plow day had a 1655 with a Waukesha he had it all restored and he was using it for the first time plowing made two rounds and he threw a rod out. He wasn't very happy, but he found another Waukesha and put it in. Think it just is for parades, tractor rides, etc he doesn't use it for a plow he had a bad experience the first time and won't do it again
 
The Waukesha motors where fine. I have a Oliver 1655 that we have worked the heck out of. Never had any issues with it. The rod problem was solved with an updated rod bolt. The problem was the worse on the 1855. I did the rod bolts on mine 25 years ago. They basically changed them to grade 8 bolts.

You need to talk to a true Oliver mechanic. I was luck in that we had a real good local dealer. I got mine lined out before they closed. There are a few updates that make the Waukesha 310 engine pretty much bullet proof.
 
Thank you all very much for your information. By reading your posts, I will just locate another block and do an overhaul. This is the second time the tractor threw a rod. The first time it happened is when it belonged to someone else in the mid 80"s. I guess they never did the updates. I just bought the tractor last spring. All it does is run the round baler, 12ft chisel plow & 16 1/2 ft vibra shank, far from a load for this tractor. Anyway, thank you all again!
