Moron Deer hunters and Keystone Cops!!!!!

This morning my brood cows did not come up for feed. I filled the hay rings last night before we got any rain. They where all here then. So just as I got chores done I get a call from the Local DNR guy that my cattle where out in the DNR ground behind my place. So I walked back to see where/what was going on.

Sure enough found where the fence had been cut. Found the entrails of a deer and a broke arrow. Looks like a bow hunter/poacher. Looks like a big buck was shot from a stand in my pasture. I found where the stand had been in a tree and followed the drag marks to where the deer was shot. It must have been a pretty good sized one. Whoever shot the deer was not strong enough to lift it over the fence so they cut the woven wire fence. I would say right at dusk Sat. night.

So my cows (102 head) found the hole this morning early. The DNR has over 1200 acres of real rough ground right behind my farm. Their ground is kind of land locked in that they have an access road that is almost a mile long to get back into the ground. So even thought they where out they where not on any heavily travel road.

So the DNR guy blocked the road while I repaired the fence. Then as we went to get the cows back in the county Sheriff showed up. Someone had called him that the cattle where out. I had walked back to the house and got my loader tractor and some fence supplies earlier. I called the cows up to the tractor. They came running. They are used to the tractor bringing them feed. So all we had to do was walk them down the DNR lane to the end of it where I have a gate. I had called my youngest son and he brought over my pickup and blocked the road and opened the gate so the cattle could not go anywhere but in the pasture. My son walked back to where we where. The sheriff called another Deputy that was close to help us keep the cattle out of the grassed area around where they are building a camp ground and rest rooms. They just have/had the buildings studded and covered with a roof.

So the deputy and my son got ahead of us and blocked the cattle from the camping area. The sheriff and I where walking behind the cattle slowly letting they work their way out the drive.

We had the cattle just started down the drive way past the camp ground when we hear a squad car coming down the lane fast with lights an full siren blaring. It was another idiot deputy sheriff. He just about ran into the front cattle. Then he set there with the siren going full bore. Those cattle where scared out of their minds. They turned around and ran full out right through the new camp grounds. I was able to keep my feet under me but the sheriff was not as lucky. He slipped and fell down. None of the cattle stepped on him but a few jumped him. While they where jumping him they had their fertilizer attachment going full bore. It had also started to rain right as we started all of this. So he was laying in mud and getting covered with manure. He was real happy!!!

My son and the other Deputy got the cattle turned to the back of the DNR ground. I helped the Sheriff up and cleaned him off a little. About that time the deputy that caused all the problem came over. The Sheriff decked him!! LMAO I do mean decked the idiot. The sheriff then hand cuffed the fool and threw him into the back of the squad car he had driven in.

I went over to see what all had been messed up. Plus I was giving the cattle some time to settle down. My son and the first Deputy had them in the back corner of the DNR ground. The new camp ground rest room building in now on the ground. The cattle spooked out of their minds had ran right through the building. They had broken too many of the studs for the roof to stay up. So about a 20 x 40 building laying flat.

We go back out the lane to see how the idiot got around my truck and the gate. He had shut the gate and pushed my truck around with the squad car. I wanted a shot at the idiot then but the Sheriff would not let me hit him.

So we got everything set back up. My son and the first deputy slowly drove the cattle back toward the lane. This time the Sheriff and I blocked them from getting to the camp grounds. The cattle went right out the lane and back into my pasture.

The sheriff went to take care of his idiot and I drove the cows up to the barns. We checked the cows over real good and there are no serious injuries to any of them. A few minor cuts but we treated them and they should heal well.

The sheriff came back out about two hours ago. He does not know who is going to be responsible for the damage to the DNR buildings. My cattle did the damage but his deputy caused them to do it. I called my insurance guy and he says I am covered either way.

The guy/gal I really want to have a talk with is the Deer hunter that cut my fence. If I find him he will wish he just gets knocked out!!!!

This is why I do not allow any hunting on any of my ground by non-family members.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. It is his stupid little deputy with the siren. Evidentally nobody invited him so what is he doing out there anyhow? Take it out of his pay or make him rebuild. Not your fault your cows got out.

The deputy probably deserved it, but in today's world striking a employee. Hope he enjoyed his stint as sheriff because he is probably history now.

If it wasn"t so serious it would be funny...
Always find it humorous when there"s a accident or problem in a populated area, and the cops try to apprenend a cattle or a bunch of cattle. Never do well. Sheriff was right to handle the deputy that way - If I was the sheriff, the deputy would be looking for a new job - maybe Walmart security! In retrospect, I bet you were secretly laughing!

Had a truck turn over recently, lost a few, others had to be removed from truck... News man said they had six or seven farmers on scene and would have things under control within the hour... Nuff said.

I am sure there are plenty of level-headed young men/women in your county that would make good deputies. If your High Sheriff has any sence, he will be recruiting a replecement for that looney tune!!

That is one of the best stories I have heard in a long time. I am sorry about the cattle, but the deputy issue was classic.

"While they where jumping him they had their fertilizer attachment going full bore."

 That there's funny, I don't care who ya are!

Ok, there has got to be some kind of advance "put down your cup and swallow the coffee" warning when a fella posts something like that.....I can only spew coffee on my computer so many times before there's going to be damage done.

I'm sorry for the damages, it's sad a few poachers ruin things for others. Hope you catch the idjit.

(quoted from post at 17:48:10 11/11/12) My problem is power line right of ways. Duke Energy runs a transmission line through my farm, and deer hunters think it is public land. I have been told so. When I chase hunters out they ask me "where am I sposed to hunt?" Ellis Kinney

This mentality of "oh, I can go anywhere to hunt that has woods" baffles me. I don't show up at some guy's house in town and park my truck in the yard and wander around looking for stuff in his back yard. So why is it okay in the country!?

You want to hunt -- get permission or rent/buy some land. Otherwise; tough luck.

Great story, JD;

I could just see the sheriff and then the deputy get decked. Sorry about the poachers. I have always been treated well by Iowa farmers when asking to hunt. Very rarely turned down. I usually go alone with just my bird dog. Try to take Michigan apples or stop at a local bakery for a "Thank You" gesture.

We have a ROW that divides our property too. I leased the portion that crosses our part. Best $17.50 I ever spent. Doesn't keep all the tresspassers, quad ridrs and snowmobilers out, but it helps and I can fence it as long as I leave a gate for electrical repair equipment.

Sorry about your incident even though I had to laugh. City slickers think you have to whoop it up when you herd cattle. They probably got it from the westerns. Back when we had stock cows they got out while my city born and bred former college roomy was visiting. He came along with me to help get them back in. When we got out of the pickup the first thing he did was run at them waving his arms. I got him stopped before the cows spooked and everything went well after that. Jim

That was funny!! It might not be the end of your Sheriff, sometimes in the smaller counties the people have a little more sense and if a guy gets clocked but deserved it the sheriff will prevail, the deputy's union will raise a fuss and try to defend Barney Fife's actions but it's obvious the Sheriff was the on scene incident commander and Deputy Fife was having problems understanding that. If the rest of the Deputy corps has much sense they won't want a lot of publicity about this event, it obviously wasn't one of their prouder moments and they do understand they need public support, if nothing else to get raises and more Deputies. Was your truck damaged when Deputy Fife pushed it out of the way with his squad? Seems your insurance company will probably come after the county for that one. Your insurance company may also tell the DNR that the event causing all the damage was from trespassers and if I'm understanding you, they entered from DNR land, they might very well tell the DNR to find the trespassers and collect from them, and oh yes while you're at it here is s bill for the fence and truck or tell them to take it out of the deer tag fees they collect. Insurance companies like denying claims almost as much as collecting premiums. I have USAA and they're pretty good at explaining to folks that you can sue us but you're probably going to loose and then we'll recover damages, court costs, legal costs and administration fees, kind of a pay me now OR pay me a lot more later situation.

The deer killer [can't call him/her a hunter]had a tool to cut the fence with them ,so probably came prepared to cut the fence if they need to.
When they cut your fence,it was the same as stealing from you, they used tools they brought to commit crime if needed.
To me if you'd dropped them as they cut the wire, there would no diffrence than stopping someone that was using a bar to break in your barn/house.
Expect to get flamed/cussed for my outlook, but that is how I feel.

Years ago, when I was a kid (and that WAS years ago,) we had an incident that spoiled a lot of hunters chances since then. Anyway, hunters opened a gate in a woven wire fence to let their dogs through, and failed to close it. Cows got into fresh green corn - several got sick with bloat, and we lost a couple. Milk production suffered big time. If he was still alive, I"d tell you to ask my dad. He"d give you an earful!. That was a pretty big loss for a small farmer in the "50s, just trying to get established in farming.

Any hunters allowed to hunt this place are by invitation only. Just tell them son and I will be hunting, and anyone else on the place becomes a safety issue.

There is a large 80 or so acre plot that was sold a few months ago. Well.....A fella in the next town over bought the 80 acres and I was told by another neighbor that he has had several letters delivered to nearby neighbors telling them to stay off his land or he will take them to court. Deer stands on the land, ATV riding through, etc.

The Sheriff will be OK. The Deputies here are not in any Union. The current sheriff just was elected but was a road deputy for many years. The idiot deputy will find that no one saw anything happen to him. I bet that he does not do a darn thing about it. HE will be trying to keep his job. I told the sheriff that it was the darnest thing I ever saw. The Deputy tripped, fell and landed in the back of his car in hand cuffs. No one laid a hand on him that I saw. Wink WInk

What PO me about him pushing the truck was the keys where in it. He could have moved it easily enough. It is a standard and we almost never park it with the parking brake set. Just put it in low gear and let it set there. Nothing was damaged on the truck. It was just the point of someone being stupid enough not to think about why the truck was parked like it was with a gate chained to the front bumper holding it open.

The building damage is anybodies guess what will happen. Have you ever heard of many winning taking on the state government in court??? Not many usually win.

Plus I am not real popular with the DNR over the land back there anyway. We fought them for years about the coyote problem back there with them denying that there was an issue.

Story is too funny not to laugh and as we all know you"re quite cable of handling things. So far this season it"s been ok around here but shotgun is next weekend and then again after thanksgiving. I"ll keep the dogs close to home and find chores that don"t take me into the woods too deep as we know the idiots think fences are something we put up for fun. Never have any issues but then again...

I had something similar happen. Got up one morning and the horses were in the front yard! Some "hunter" had shot a deer in my back pasture, gutted it, cut my fence, drove a 4x4 into the field, took the deer & left. A couple years later, most of the group that hunted the property next door went to prison on drug charges. I've said it before here, the average hunter is a slob. And that is me being polite.

I had a guy who was legal in the right of way with his snowmobile that got too close to my fence and got tangles up in it. I saw it happen. By the time I got my warm stuff on, got the sled fired up and got to him, he and his bud were cutting my fence to free his sled. I stood there and made them fix my fence, took em on a "tour" to show them that in fact that fence was keeping cows in. Then had em in for a cupp of coffee. The guys were very sorry and being city boys never gave any thought that a fence may be there for a reason. Now they stop in every year and say hi. But I hate to think what would have happened had they just cut the fence and left. That fence is on a state highway.

Sure hope you fixed that sheriff a cup of coffee and a nice bowl of spam soup to help get him in a better spirit

Glad things didn't turn out worse.....

JD Seller,

Sorry for your troubles. Just a shame that some hunter would cut your fence - people just have no respect for other's property.

But geez, you sure do have a comical way of telling a story! I could picture it all so well! Sounds like some TV comedy cop scene - like Big Enis and Little Enis, I think from Smokey and The Bandit.

Great story.

I went from being mad on your behalf to a little sad to lol.

I figured the Sheriff would/should be ok. Sheriff made his deputy instantly accountable for his actions. More of that is need in our society.

The sad part is that the guy who cut your fence considers himself to be a productive contributor to society. I'm sure he feels he worked hard for what he has and has nothing nice to say about people who do nothing but sit around and collect government money. He probably says "Government Motors" a lot too.

What this guy doesn't understand is he is just as much of a taker as any of the people he derides. He's completely oblivious to what he's done and sees nothing wrong with it. He has no idea that the fence belonged to someone, and was there for a reason.

Bet if you chased a deer on to his property, shot it, and knocked down a section of this little white picket fence to extract it, he'd be fit to be tied.

It's called being a hypocrite. We have way too many of those these days.

Hi, Sweetsie. Just to let you know, you, as well as the rest of us, probably have some war stories that are similiar if you think back a few years. For those of us who have been in this business any amount of time, and for those who haven't, if this job didn't have those train wrecks from time to time, it could be awfully boring. Some can be side splittingly funny when we look back on them, but are a nightmare as we go through them. A few months ago, my G-son broke his hand while we were working cows. Wasn't funny at the time, but now we deride him because only an idiot would lose his temper and short stroke a heifer on a pin bone as she ran over him. Sometimes dealing with morons makes us laugh when it is over, and IMHO, many people are morons more often than we think. It's when they come together in one place that really makes us laugh.
